Interaction of xenon light with the surface of 304 stainless steel (open access)

Interaction of xenon light with the surface of 304 stainless steel

Laser amplifier frames fabricated from Type 304 stainless steel are known to cause damage to glass lenses by ejecting particles which are deposited on the lenses. High energy pulses of xenon light interact with the steel surface to produce damage sites. Heat treatment and surface cleaning procedures greatly affect the surface stability of the steel and influence contamination generated by the steel. It is believed that inclusions and/or carbides play a role, and the size of damage sites observed on glass correlate with the size of nonmetallic phases in the steel. Thermal etching of the steel was found to be a principle mechanism of surface damage caused by the high energy xenon light.

Study of the health effects of bicycling in an urban atmosphere. Final report (open access)

Study of the health effects of bicycling in an urban atmosphere. Final report

This report analyzes data on the health effects of bicycling in an urban environment through intensive study of ten healthy male subjects bicycling or driving in systematically varied conditions in the streets of Washington, D.C. Evaluation criteria for available technology and instrumentation are included and a methodology is developed for route selection. Specific air pollutants (carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfates, nitrates, and particulates) are measured concurrently with exposure and subsequent changes in health status identified through pulmonary function testing, cardiovascular testing, and blood and symptoms analysis. The report concludes that no major adverse short-term health effects were noted for ten healthy male subjects while bicycling or driving in levels of pollution and thermal stress encountered during the study period. Recommendations for further research are also presented.

Analysis of LOFT steam generator main feed piping loop seal modification (open access)

Analysis of LOFT steam generator main feed piping loop seal modification

The stress analysis is presented for the proposed loop seal modification to the LOFT Steam Generator Main Feed Piping. THE SAP IV finite element computer program was used to analyze normal, upset, emergency, and faulted conditions. Results of the analysis indicate that the modified main feed piping system will satisfy all structural adequacy criteria specified in Subarticle NC-3650 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Results also show that the isolation snubber configuration, specified in LTR 115-11, will also be adequate for the piping configuration analyzed.

New approach to regression in certain time/space series problems. Technical report No. 11. [Dose-response relationships for air pollution] (open access)

New approach to regression in certain time/space series problems. Technical report No. 11. [Dose-response relationships for air pollution]

This paper introduces a new method for estimating a dose-response relationship from spatially averaged time series of air pollution and health data. Because time is perceived as a nuisance parameter to be eliminated, least-squares regression and traditional time series methodology (e.g., spectral analysis, Box-Jenkins methods) are rejected in favor of a nonparametric estimation procedure based on observing health effects in times of nearly equal pollution. The method requires estimating the ratio of two density functions and avoids problems of aggregation, linearity, and normality. The procedure seems most useful, at present, as a data analytic and data display device rather than as an inferential tool.

Ex-vessel core catcher design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation. [LMFBR] (open access)

Ex-vessel core catcher design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation. [LMFBR]

As part of the overall study of the consequences of a hypothetical failure to scram following loss of pumping power, design requirements and preliminary concepts evaluation of an ex-vessel core catcher (EVCC) were performed. EVCC is the term applied to a class of devices whose primary objective is to provide a stable subcritical and coolable configuration within containment following a postulated accident in which it is assumed that core debris has penetrated the Reactor Vessel and Guard Vessel. Under these assumed conditions a set of functional requirements were developed for an EVCC and several concepts were evaluated. The studies were specifically directed toward the FFTF design considering the restraints imposed by the physical design and construction of the FFTF plant.

PWR blowdown heat transfer separate-effects program: thermal-hydraulic test facility experimental data report for test 104

Reduced instrument responses are presented for Thermal-Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF) test 104, which is part of the ORNL Pressurized-Water Reactor (PWR) Blowdown Heat Transfer Separate-Effects Program. The objective of the program is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomenon governing the energy transfer and transport processes that occur during a loss-of-coolant accident in the PWR system. Test 104 was conducted to obtain CHF in bundle 1 under blowdown conditions. The primary purpose of this report is to make the reduced instrument responses during test 104 available.

Cell and stack design alternatives. Second quarterly report, November 1, 1978-January 31, 1979 (open access)

Cell and stack design alternatives. Second quarterly report, November 1, 1978-January 31, 1979

Progress on a program to develop commercially viable phosphoric acid fuel cell driven on-site integration energy systems is presented. A mass and energy balance was completed for one operating point of a selected power generation sub-system with a power output of 119 kW. Potentially, 87% of the LHV of the input fuel is available as bus bar electricity or useful heat. A 2 kW stack of conventional design and a 0.5 kW DIGAS cooled stack have been constructed and are on test at ERC. Renovation of a space for the Westinghouse stack test facility is underway and procurement of equipment has been initiated. The coupled cell temperature - current density analysis has been modified to include the effects of turbulent coolant flow and extended to permit analysis of up to 10 process plates between cooling plates. The REFORM computer program was verified by comparison with data received from the government project manager. A method for predicting carbon deposition was developed and compared with data from the literature.

Development of ultrafiltration and inorganic adsorbents for reducing volumes of low-level and intermediate-level liquid waste: April--June 1977 (open access)

Development of ultrafiltration and inorganic adsorbents for reducing volumes of low-level and intermediate-level liquid waste: April--June 1977

Ultrafication (UF) membranes have demonstrated 90 to 98% rejection of gross alpha in laboratory tests. In the treatment of laundry wastes, rejection of activity ranged from 98 to 99.9% gross alpha. The pilot UF system was installed and started up. Flux decline curves and volume reduction performance were determined. Volume reductions of 210 : 1 were achieved at flux rates of 1.1 gal/min (system is rated at 2 to 3 gal/min, 90% recovery) at activity rejection of 99.94% gross alpha. Adsorbent studies demonstrated capacities in excess of 10/sup 9/ dis/min/g for uranium-233 and in excess of 10/sup 8/ dis/min/g for plutonium-238. Construction and start-up of the Engineering Test Facility has been completed.

LOFT blowdown loop piping thermal analysis Class I review (open access)

LOFT blowdown loop piping thermal analysis Class I review

In accordance with ASME Code, Section III requirements, all analyses of Class I components must be independently reviewed. Since the LOFT blowdown loop piping up through the blowdown valve is a Class I piping system, the thermal analyses are reviewed. The Thermal Analysis Branch comments to this review are also included. It is the opinion of the Thermal Analysis Branch that these comments satisfy all of the reviewers questions and that the analyses should stand as is, without additional considerations in meeting the ASME Code requirements and ANC Specification 60139.

Kilowatt Isotope Power System: component test report for the ground demonstration system alternator stator. 78-KIPS-17

The purpose of this test was to demonstrate that the alternator stator has satisfactorily completed sufficient testing to safisfy the requirements set forth within the Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) Component Test Specification for the GDS Alternator Stator (TS 2538). The results of the acceptance tests conducted on the alternator stator, S/N 003, are presented, and show that the stator did meet specified requirements.
