The back of the photograph proclaims, “View of broken dam from downstream side. A six inch rain in one night caused the dam to overtop its entire length and finally break. Notice the huge pieces of concrete from the core wall and facing that were carried down by the water. A large bridge washed through this break. This dam and reservoir, which cost $350,000, silted in 48% in nine years and was soon to be abandoned because its storage capacity was reduced too much for it to be relied upon for city water supply.”
