I Cannot See You—The Perspectives of Deaf Students to Online Learning during COVID-19 Pandemic: Saudi Arabia Case Study

This article investigates the e-learning experiences of deaf students, focusing on the college of the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Particularly, it studies the challenges and concerns faced by deaf students during the sudden shift to online learning. Results report problems with internet access, inadequate support, and inaccessibility of content from learning systems, among other issues. The authors argue that institutions should consider a procedure to create more accessible technology that is adaptable during the pandemic to serve individuals with diverse needs.

Self-powered Wireless Sensors and Interfaces for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (open access)

Self-powered Wireless Sensors and Interfaces for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Data management plan for the grant, "Self-powered Wireless Sensors and Interfaces for UAVs." Self-powered wireless sensors acting as nanogenerators can not only harvest ambient environment energy during the flight but also are capable of wirelessly monitoring pressure, temperature and other parameters to make the UAV truly an intelligent transportation system (ITS). This proposal requests the acquisition of a Mask Aligner to pattern such self-powered sensors with nano-antenna structures for wireless communication. The addition of the proposed system will enable researchers to study novel 2D materials as self-powered sensors and actuators. The proposed infrastructure would allow the development of smart, autonomous mobility systems with breakthroughs in intelligent technologies, research and workforce preparation.

Disentangling Orbital and Valley Hall Effects in Bilayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (open access)

Disentangling Orbital and Valley Hall Effects in Bilayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

This article shows that a bilayer of 2H-MoSâ‚‚ is an orbital Hall insulator that exhibits a sizeable orbital Hall effect in the absence of both spin and valley Hall effects. The results are based on density functional theory and low-energy effective model calculations and strongly suggest that bilayers of TMDs are highly suitable platforms for direct observation of the orbital Hall insulating phase in two-dimensional materials.

Development of Neutral Red as a pH/pCO2 Luminescent Sensor for Biological Systems

This article demonstrates for the first time that Neutral Red (NR) can also serve as a CO2 sensor, because of NR’s unique optical properties, which change with dissolved carbon dioxide (dCO2) concentrations. In this article optical sensitivity of NR was quantified as a function of changes in absorption and emission spectra to dCO2 in a pH 7.3 buffer medium at eight dCO2 concentrations.
