Abstract: Various procedures for extracting uranium from fiberglass air filters have been tested and compared. Satisfactory results which involve the least amount of handling are obtained by simply washing the material with hot 1:1 hydrochloric acid.

Unit developed at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory for extraction and overcomes the disadvantages of the batch countercurrent units currently in use.

The following report analyzes various experiments made to discover factors that may affect properties of extruded compacts of crystal bar zirconium.

Introduction. the conventional procedures of analysis for uranium and manganese can be employed in the analysis of alloys of these metals. The alloys are reacted with perchloric acid and hydrogen peroxide, fumed to remove any chloride ions, diluted to volume and aliquots analyzed by redoximetry.

It has been known for a long time that thorium is precipitated by oxalic acid in acid solutions, but a survey of the literature showed no study of the limits of the acidity and oxalic acid excess which yield quantitative results. V. I. Spitzin reports on the solubility of thorium oxalate in varying concentrations of several acids, but the effect of an excess oxalic acid is not included. Since solutions are sometimes presented for analysis that contain more than the recommended two per cent mineral acid, it would be advantageous to be able to quantitatively remove the thorium without otherwise altering the solutions. This was especially of interest in solutions containing bismuth, since it was hoped that some amounts of thorium could be precipitated in nitric acid solutions containing large quantities of bismuth. In removing the bismuth, first by a bismuth oxychloride precipitation, thee is every opportunity for carrying of the thorium.

The following report discusses an equation derived by which the maximum allowable concentration in the atmosphere of a beta-omitting isotope for which lung damage is the limiting consideration can be calculated.

This report provides an overview of the creation of the Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor Experiment program. It furthers the work by constructing a single loop to test all the components required for the 16 loop reactor. This utility loop was also constructed to provide a facility for testing various components such as valves and flow meters.

From introduction: "The concluding remarks of the report on the electron diffraction study of UF6 suggest two alternate explanations for the apparent discrepancy between the structure proposed for this compound as deduced from X-ray diffraction work on single crystals and from the electron diffraction investigation of the vapor. The second explanation is based on the premise that the difference may be due to essentially unlike methods of treating the diffraction data. In this report we shall analyze X-ray powder photographs following a scheme parallel to that used in the analysis of the electron diffraction data, to check whether this particular explanation is tenable."

This quarterly progress report details ongoing work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Project. As there is no accurate measurements of the energy distribution of neutrons emerging from large uranium blocks, it becomes of importance to see how much information of this kind can be derived from the slowing down distribution of the neutrons in a water tank.

Leaching investigations on low grade Belgian Congo uranium ores and recovery of uranium from acid leach solutions by uranous phosphate precipitation, uranyl phosphate precipitation and by sodium carbonate retreatment of alkali precipitates are described.

A resin-in-pulp process was developed using a series of fixed-screen or Winchester cells. Various laboratory and pilot plant models were constructed and tested under simulated plant conditions. The fixed-screen device proved very effective in the recovery of uranium and/or vanadium by a continuous, resin-in-pulp process.

The following report describes and foretells the situation in medium in which neutrons are being (a)produced as fast neutrons, (b) slowed down to thermal speeds by impacts with nuclei, and (c) absorbed by nuclei in such a manner that sometimes fresh fast neutrons appear at the place where a thermal neutron has just appeared.

The work described in this technical report was undertaken as part of a larger program dealing with a systematic investigation of changes in the physical prosperities of artificial graphite due to neutron bombardment. Very pronounced among those changes is the increase in the elastic modulus. Since there is a general relationship between the elastic modulus of a given substance and its specific heat, it was expected that corresponding changes will occur in the specific heat. In conclusion, the experiments determined that it appears that the low temperature specific heat measurements of strongly bombarded samples will be helpful for the understanding of the nature and the mechanism of the changes produced by neutron bombardment and annealing.

Secondary charge effects from a 10 kilovolt proton beam and their effect upon beam current measurement are investigated. A collector is designed for beam current metering of a 60 kilovolt proton beam by means of charge measurement and energy measurement.

From introduction: The Bluff-Salt Wash contact was mapped on aerial photographs. Mines and prospects were also plotted on the photos. The mines and prospects were studied and a brief description of the mineralization and its occurrence was written. These field notes, which will be given to Hatfield and party, contain data on the presence of carbon and fossil logs, lithology of the gangue rock, sedimentary structures, etc. Regional structure and evidence for igneous activity were also noted.

The following report is a quarterly report for first quarter in 1954 for the Phillips Petroleum Company. During the first quarter of 1954 considerable progress was made on the design, construction and testing required to initiate work on new programs. The result of this is the beginning construction and design on the Reactivity Measurement Facility.
