Land Clearance, Cultivation & Brush and Weed Control

Photograph of basal-bark application using 2-3/4 gallons of a low volatile 2-4-5-T herbicide ester (4 pounds acid per gallon of material used) in 100 gallons of diesel oil. The spray is being applied so as to completely encircle and wet to the point of creating run-off onto the soil the lower 12 inches of each plant. The equipment used was a John Bean power sprayer. The brush and trees were blackjack, post and white oak, hickory, elm, persimmon and dogwood.

Photograph of Suitor fescue. Planting made during the latter part of September 1947. Fifty pounds of seed were furnished by the Soil Conservation Service with five acres planted. No. 6 soil. About 200 pounds of 3-9-18 fertilizer were used on the five acres. Approximately 200 pounds of seed were harvested in the summer of 1948. It is believed that twice as much seed would have been harvested had it not been for a heavy rain two days before the harvest. AR-61-224.

The back of the photograph proclaims, "Cover on the very shallow phase of the red shale hills (Soils Unit 24) site in the Rolling Red Plains is sparse even in excellent condition. If the range has been grazed closely in past years, so that there is no accumulation of litter on the ground, there is room between the plants for raindrops to strike the soil directly. This photo shows lightly used side oats [sic] grass on the site."

Tame Pasture on E. T. McCollum's Farm

Photograph of Claude Newland, SCS Soil Scientist, examines the field of E. T. McCollum, 2 ½ miles north of Vinita. The back of the photograph proclaims, "This field produced 6 ½ bushels of oats per acre in 1950. The oats had been overseeded with sericea lespedeza. The sericea was fertilized with 650 lbs. per acre of rock phosphate which was drilled into the soil. In 1962 the sericea was plowed up, 2 ½ tons of lime and 100 lbs. of 10-20-10 fertilizer per acre was applied and Greenfield Bermuda was planted. That fall the Bermuda was overseeded with vetch, rye and fescue and 125 lbs. of 10-20-10 fertilizer was applied. No fertilizer has been applied since that time. Estimated forage yield was 4 tons per acre in 1966."
