Fast Electronics in High-Energy Physics

A brief review of fast electronics is given, leading up to the present state of the art. Cherenkov counters in high-energy physics are discussed, including an example of a velocity-selecting Cherenkov counter. An electronic device to aid in aligning external beams from high-energy accelerators is described. A scintillation-counter matrix to identify bubble chamber tracks is discussed. Some remarks on the future development of electronics in high-energy physics experiments are included.

A Separated 1.17-Bev/c K- Meson Beam

This report describes the design and testing of a 1.17-Bev/c separated K{sup -} beam designed in the fall of 1958 in connection with a 15-in. hydrogen bubble chamber experiment. At the target the K{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} ratio was 1/140. At the chamber, after two stages of electromagnetic separation and 4.0 K{sup -}-meson decay lengths, the K{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} ratio was 12.5, corresponding to a total pion suppression by a factor of about 10{sup 5}. The K flux at the chamber was 0.87 K{sup -} per 10 protons on the target.

Coherent Electromagnetic Effects in High-Current Particle Accelerators: [Part] 3. Electromagnetic-Coupling Instabilities in a Coasting Beam

The electromagnetic interaction of an intense relativistic coasting beam with itself, including the effect of a confining nonperfect vacuum tank, or a quiescent rf cavity, is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the resonances that may occur between harmonics of the particle circulation frequencies and the electromagnetic modes of the cavities can lead to a longitudinal instability of the beam. A criterion for stability of the beam against such longitudinal bunching is obtained as a restriction on the shunt impedance of the rf cavity, or the Q of the vacuum tank. This criterion contains the energy spread and intensity of the coasting beam, as well as the parameters of the accelerator. Numerical examples are given which indicate that in general the resonances with the vacuum tank will not cause instabilities, while those with an rf cavity can be prevented from causing instabilities by choosing the shunt impedance at a sufficiently low but still convenient value.

ANHARMONIC POTENTIAL CONSTANTS AND THEIR DEPENDENCE UPON BOND LENGTH

Empirical study of cubic and quartic vibrational force constants for diatomic molecules shows them to be approximately exponential functions of internuclear distance. A family of curves is obtained, determined by the location of the bonded atoms in rows of the periodic table. Displacements between successive curves correspond closely to those in Badger's rule for quadratic force constants (for which the parameters are redetermined to accord with all data now available). Constants for excited electronic and ionic states appear on practically the same curves as those for the ground states. Predictions based on the diatomic correlations agree with the available cubic constants for bond stretching in polyatomic molecules, regardless of the type of bonding involved. Implications of these regularities are discussed. (auth)

Laboratory-Scale Demonstration of the Fused Salt Volatility Process

The feasibility of processing enriched irradiated zirconium--uranium alloy fuel by the fused salt-fluoride volatility procedure has been demonstrated in laboratory tests with fuel having a burnup of over 10%. Uranium recoveries were greater than 99% and decontamination factors for radioactive fission products were 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 6/. The UF/sub 6/ product contained significant quantities of nonradioactive impurities; additional work in this area is needed. (auth)

SPALLATION OF ALUMINUM BY 28-Gev PROTONS

In the bombardment of Al foils with 28-Bev protons the following cross sections (in mb) for production of the indicated nuclides were obtained: Be/sup 7/ , 7.9 plus or minus 0.5; F/sup 18/, 6.0 plus or minus 0.3; C/sup 11/, 4.7 plus or minus 0.2; Na/sup 22/, 9.8 plus or minus 0.6. N/sup 13/, 1.18 plus or minus 0.07; Na/su p 24/, 8.3 plus or minus 0.5; O/sup 15/, 3.6 plus or minus 1.0, Mg/sup 27/, 0.067 plus or minus 0.006. An upper limit for the Ne/ sup 24/ eross section of 0.6 mb was obtained. The Mg/sup 27/ cross section has been corrected for secondary reactions and represents only production by primary protons, presumably by the (p,p pi /sup +/) reaction. The measurements were made relative to the production of C/sup 11/ activity in polyethylene and polystyrene foils. The production of Be/sup 7/ in the plastic foils was also observed and corresponds to a cross section of 7.7 plus or minus 0.4 mb per carbon nucleus. By comparison of these cross sections with those at lower bombarding energies, no significant trend of the excitation functions is observable. (auth)

Studies on Lymphocytes. [Part] 1. Lymphopenia Produced by Prolonged Extracorporeal Irradiation of Circulating Blood

A method for extracorporeal irradiation of the circulating blood is described. Extracorporeal irradiation of the blood will produce a lymphopenia promptly which persists for weeks. Heparin in high doses in the calf produces a lymphocytosis and neutrophilic leukocytosis. (auth) Red cell sensitization by either agglutinating or incomplete antibodies was detected with an I/sup 131/ labeled rabbit antihuman globulin serum (RAG). Non-specific absorption of RAG by red cells was reduced to a minimum by the addition of 6% bovine albumin. The reactions between RAG and the sensitized erythrocytes were typical of antigen- antibody reactions and the sensitivity of the test was found to be greater than the standard Coombs test. Quantitative studies of the degree of erythrocyte sensitization by isoimmune or autoimmune antibodies were possible with this technic. (auth)

NEUTRON RADIOGRAPHY: A 1962 PROGRESS REPORT

The possibility of improved detection discrimination between selected materials; the high absorption of several 1ight materials such as hydrogen, lithium, and boron; and the relatively low absorption of many heavy materials are some characteristics which make neutron radiographic inspection attractive as a complementary technique to xradiography. A study of neutron radiography is reported in which the emphasis has been placed upon determining many of the characteristics of various techniques for detecting neutron images. Characteristics of photographic detectors for thermal neutron images are outlined. (R.J.S.)

An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter

An isochronal differential-type microcalorimeter has been designed and constructed. As a result of its simple design it is very easy to handle the samples and assemble the calorimeter. Important to the operation of the calorimeter is a program, also working on the differential principle, that provides linear temperature rise of the samples. The calorimeter is used to measure very small energy releases such as those found in precipithtion, stored energy, etc. It is demonstrated that the calorimeter is easily capable of measuring 0.005 cal with a probable error of the order of 1 to 2%. It is found, on the basis of calculations extended from the bulk- superconductor case, that for thin-film superconductors: the superconducting- normal phase transition induced by a magnetic field is second-order at all temperatures; a simple scaling rule exists concerning the field and temperature dependence of the energy gap; and the critical field depends on the thickness and temperature according to a certain formula for thicknesses above about 0.5 x 10/ sup -6/ cm. OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF CHROMOPHORE-MACROMOLECULE COMPLEXES:ABSORPTION AND FLUORESCENCE OF ACEIDINE DIES BOUND TO POLYPHOSPHATES ANDDNA

Dye-macromolecule complexes provide good models for the study of the effects of coupling between chromophores. In addition to modifications of the visible and UV absorption spectra of the dyes at small interchromophore distances, very efficient energy transfer has been demonstrated at longer distances. The probability of nonradiative transition increases with the number of excitation transfers so that an array of oscillators close to one another becomes nonfluorescent. The insertion of a dye molecule, acting as a trap for the excitation energy, in the highly ordered system of chromophores constituted by the purine and pyrimidine bases of native DNA has given results supporting the intercalation model of Lerman and providing an experimental approach to the problem of the path length of energy migration in the DNA molecule. The average excitation path length seems to be of the order of only ten base pairs, a result which can explain the lack of fluorescence of the DNA.

THE REACTIONS OF ENERGETIC CARBON ATOMS IN METHANE OXYGEN AND PHASE DEPENDENCE RADIATION DAMAGE EFFECTS

Studies were made on the reactions of C/sup 11/ in methane containing oxygen. The nuclear reactions C/sup 12/(n,2n) and C/sup 12/(p,pn) were used to produce C/sup 11/. Concomitant radiolysis of the methane during C/sup 11/ production clearly affected product distribution. C/sup 11/-labeled ethane and propane decreased while methane, ethylene, and acetylene decreased. It was assumed that reduction by hydrogen atoms was probably occurring in the unscavenged system. The effects of oxygen and of phase are discussed. In all cases, in duplicate systems, the product distributions resulting from inducing the C/sup 12/(p,pn) reaction were the same within experimental error as those resulting from the C/sup 12/(n,2n) reaction. AN INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM FOR IRRADIATION EFFECTS IN METALS

An information storage and retrieval system (PIC) was developed, utilizing the IBM 7090 computer, for handling data pertaining to the effects of neutron irradiation on metals. The input includes a reference identification, an appropriate abstract or extract summarizing the article, code identification parameters analogous to those used by the ASM-SLA Literature Classification System, and special codes identifying relevant irradiation and testing parameters. The output contains the same data plus printing out the meaning of all special codes. Presently, the information storage consists of more than two hundred references representing several thousand lines of information. The system is both general and definitive, permitting the selection of a single piece of information or of many references dealing with a general field. It is possible to select material on the basis of one or more of the following factors: material, general or specific; type of literature; general or specific property such as mechanical tests or tensile tests; conditions of irradiation including type and level of flux, integrated flux, irradiation temperature, and reactor environment; test conditions such as temperature and environment; and general variables that might be controlling such as strain rate, specimen geometry, grain size, and fabrication history.
