Rockefeller Hall, Bishop College, Marshall, Texas, 6-J-64

Black and white photo-postcard of Rockefeller Hall of Bishop College, Marshall, Texas. The three-story brick building has a gambrel roof with a row of nine small dormers with round-arched windows on the roof. Two exterior staircases across the facade leading from the front porch to the dormers was probably a later addition for fire safety. A drainpipe from the roof gutter is visible on the left part of the facade. A tree and bushes are in the foreground, as well as a telephone pole. At the bottom of the image in white letters is the title, "Rockefeller Hall - Bishop College - Marshall, Texas. 6-J-64" Bishop College was established in 1881 as a Baptist college for African Americans in Texas. The school moved to Dallas in 1961. The campus was sold the same year. Its buildings were demolished. There is no postmark or message on the back of the card. The format, quality, and number code are almost identical to another card in this collection with the publisher's name W. M. Cline Co., Chattanooga, printed on it, and this card was probably produced by the same company.

Color tinted halftone postcard from around 1911 showing St. Mary's Academy, Marshall, Texas. The view shows a side entrance facing the street and part of the main entrance on the left. It is a three-story brick building on a raised basement of stone. Printed on the top of the image in black is the title, "St. Marie's [sic] Academy, Marshall, Texas." The postmark on the back of the card is dated Dec. 21, 1911, and the card is addressed to Mrs. Ida Swartz in Reading, Pa. Printed on the left edge of the message section of the back: "Published exclusively for Duke & Ayres Nickel Stores. Made in U. S. A." Holy Cross nuns founded St. Mary's Academy in Marshall in 1880. It continued until 1957. This building was constructed in 1911.

[Postcard of Noonday Tabernacle, Noonday Holiness Camp, Near Hallsville, Texas]

Color halftone postcard showing the Noonday Tabernacle. located four miles north of Hallsville, Texas. The view shows an open air pavilion with a large hipped roof, supported by posts with trusses around the outer edge. Wood benches can be seen within the space. Trees surround it, and the bottom sections of their trunks are painted white to make them more visible to drivers at night. A dirt road curves toward the tabernacle and part of a parked car can be seen on the right. According to the caption the Noonday Holiness Camp was organized October 15, 1898 and located four miles north of Hallsville, Texas on Farm to Market Road #450, with camp meetings held annually in August, and with twelve camp houses offered free to campers. Color halftone postcard of the Gables Cafe, Marshall, Texas, probably from the 1960s. The one-story side-gable building consists of a central red-brick cottage with a small cross-gable entrance and white wood-siding additions on both sides. A large rectangular sign supported by two posts in front of the entrance says "The Gables Restaurant." It has fluorescent bulbs for illumination at night. A metal structure on the roof supports lighted letters spelling "The Gables Cafe." A few automobiles are parked in the parking lot in front. Group photograph of an elementary school baseball team and their teacher seated on the steps of the school. The nine boys are wearing their school clothes, but a few appear to wear athletic shoes. They each have a mitt and two hold bats. The female teacher sits beside the boys, wearing high button shoes, and holds a baseball in her hands. Part of a bicycle is visible in the background. Written below the second boy from the right is the name Sims, Jr., 1915. Written on the back of the board are the names of a few of those in the picture. In the first row the teacher: Miss Louise Adams, boy to her right: Joe Cockrell, boy on the far right: Laurie Martin, boy to his left, Sims McCutchan, Jr. On the second row, only the middle boy is identified giving only his last name, Applebaum. The double doors of the school are open behind the group.

Color halftone postcard of the First United Methodist Church, located at 300 East Houston St., in Marshall, Texas, photographed in the 1950s. The main building was constructed in 1861. It is a front gable brick masonry structure in a Greek revival stye with a bell tower and steeple on top of the front gable. The entrance porch has four tapered square brick columns surmounted by a pediment. The photograph was taken after 1949 when there were renovations and an addition to the east of the building. A redesigned bell tower with octagonal cupola replaced an earlier tower. Stucco was applied to the original brick masonry in 1927. An automobile is parked in front of the church, and a traffic light is visible suspended from a wire to the right of the building. There is no postmark or message on the back.
