Mines and prospects are located on deposits and (or) occurrences of gold, bentonite, magnesite, and agate in the eastern and southeastern part of the study area.

The present study covers 24,735 acres of the 72,675 acre wilderness study area, preliminary recommended as suitable for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System in La Paz and Maricopa Counties, Arizona. During the winter of 1983-84, under authority of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579), the Bureau mapped and sampled mines and prospects in and near the WSA to determine the mineral resources present.

A Method for Estimating Ground-Water Return Flow to the Lower Colorado River in the Yuma Area, Arizona and California

Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for estimating the amount of subsurface return flow to the Colorado River in the Yuma area. This report presents a method that permits an approximate accounting of ground-water return flow from each side of the Colorado River in Yuma reach. The method presented in this report was developed specifically for application in the Yuma area. The validity of the assumptions inherent in the method was evaluated on the basis of the local hydrologic system. The applicability of the method to other hydrologic systems is not addressed in this report.

Ground-Water Monitoring in the Tucson Copper Mining District

Abstract: Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

GEOTHERM sample file contains 314 records for Arizona. Three computer-generated indexes are found in appendices A, B, and C of this report. The indexes give one line summaries of each GEOTHERM record describing the chemistry of geothermal springs and wells in the sample file for Arizona. Each index is sorted by different variables to assist the user in locating geothermal records describing specific sites. Appendix A is sorted by the county name and the name of the source. Also given are latitude, longitude (both use decimal minutes), township, range, section, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix B is sorted by county, township, range, and section. Also given are name of source, GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). Appendix C is first sorted into one-degree blocks by latitude, and longitude, and then by name of source. Adjacent one-degree blocks which are published as a 1:250,000 map are combined under the appropriate map name. Also given are GEOTHERM record identifier, and temperature (/sup 0/C). A bibliography is given in Appendix D.

Streamflow Losses and Changes in Ground-Water Levels Along the Salt and Gila Rivers Near Phoenix, Arizona--February 1978 to June 1980

Scope: This report summarizes part of the hydrologic data needed to determine the effects of streamflow on ground-water storage. The report includes (1) streamflow data at selected points between the water-conservation reservoirs on the Salt and Verde Rivers and the Gila River as Gillespie Dam, (2) changes in ground-water levels in 169 observation wells from February 1978 to May 1980, (3) an estimate of the streamflow losses along the Salt and Gila Rivers between Granite Reef and Gillespie Dams from March 1978 to June 1980, and (4) the infiltration rates on May, 9, 1979, for the Salt River downstream from Granite Reef Dam. Most of the hydrologic data in this report are available in computer-printout form and may be consulted at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson, and Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix. Copies of the data can be obtained at private expense.

From introduction: During 1981 the Bureau of Mines conducted a field investigation of the Bureau of Land Management's Lime Hills, Narrows, and Sand Cove Wilderness Study Areas (WSA's), Mohave County, Arizona as part of a joint effort with the Geological Survey to make a mineral survey of the area. Surface workings and outcrops were examined and samples taken from rock sections that appeared to represent most of the mineralized area. Complete analytical results and sample descriptions are available for public inspection at the Bureau of Mines, Intermountain Field Operations Center, Building 20, Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo. Part of the area also was examined and sampled in 1979 by L. W. Hamm, Bureau of Mines (Villalobos and Hamm, 1980), during a mineral resource study of the Paiute Primitive Area.

Plan of Study for the Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin in Colorado, Utah, Wyomingm and Arizona

Abstract: Water shortages are expected in the Upper Colorado River Basin because of increasing water demands for various uses. Ground-water supplies can help to reduce water shortages but ground-water reservoirs have not been studied in detail. The regional aquifer systems analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin is a study of the major ground-water resources of the region. Aquifers occur in the sedimentary rock sequences in basins and uplifted regions, in volcanic-rock regions, and in stream-valley alluvium. The project work will include collection and compilation of existing geologic, geophysical, hydrologic, and geochemical data. These data will be used to assess the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer systems and to estimate the hydrologic effects of discharge from, or recharge to, selected aquifers.
