Final environmental statement for the geothermal leasing program (open access)

Final environmental statement for the geothermal leasing program

This second of the four volumes of the Geothermal Leasing Program final impact statement contains the individual environmental statements for the leasing of federally owned geothermal resources for development in three specific areas: Clear Lake-Geysers; Mono Lake-Long Valley; and Imperial Valley, all in California. It also includes a summary of the written comments received and departmental responses relative to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement issued in 1971; comments and responses on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement; consultation and coordination in the development of the proposal and in the preparation of the Draft Environmental Statement; and coordination in the review of the Draft Environmental Statement.

Review of ARHCO Waste Tank Leak and Level Monitoring Systems and Material Balance Techniques (open access)

Review of ARHCO Waste Tank Leak and Level Monitoring Systems and Material Balance Techniques

A review of selected portions of the ARHCO waste tank farm monitoring methods and systems was made. Only preliminary evaluations were made as the study was carried out over a period of only ten days. The study was requested by the Operation Support Engineering Department of ARHCO and the objectives as developed were divided into four tasks. Briefly, these were: evaluation of the waste tank dry well monitoring and data processing systems; evaluation of the accuracy (and precision) of material balance calculations for transfers from one tank to another tank; evaluation of the capabilities of material balance techniques for the detection of leaks in evaporator bottoms loop systems; and evaluation of the general operability of liquid level instrument systems currently in use and alternatives to these systems. The objectives of these tasks are restated in more detail in each of the sections below. An overview of the entire Hanford radioactive waste program including a limited description of the physical equipment involved can be found in PWM-530, Hanford Radioactive Waste Management Plans. Additional efforts have been initiated to establish an overall R and D program to more fully evaluate these systems and other factors relative to the successful operation of the …

Computer simulation studies of parabolic interpolation circuitry (open access)

Computer simulation studies of parabolic interpolation circuitry

A computer-simulation study of parabolic interpolation circuitry for machine tool controllers was completed. Results showed that a tool center can be moved along any parabolic arc to within any realistic tolerance. Circuit design requirements were determined and input data required by the parabolic interpolators were defined. Simulation results showed that tool motion along a pronounced parabolic path would stay within a 1/2-microinch tolerance. An application of the parabolic interpolation toward reducing the large input data volumes required by conventional numerical controllers was achieved. (auth)

HTGR Base Program. Quarterly progress report for the period ending November 30, 1973

The High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) work reported includes studies of basic fission-product distribution mechanisms, recycle fuel studies (including designing and testing of recycle test elements) and exploration of head-end reprocessing methods (as part of a national recycle plan and of a recycle fuel plan), and physics and fuel management studies. Materials studies include irradiation and analysis of fuel particles in capsules to evaluate fuel systems, and basic studies of control materials and of carbon and graphite. Experimental procedures and results are discussed and, where appropriate, the data are presented. (auth)

Recovery of nitric acid from raffinate and condensate solutions by steam distillation/pyrohydrolysis and fractional distillation in a glass column (open access)

Recovery of nitric acid from raffinate and condensate solutions by steam distillation/pyrohydrolysis and fractional distillation in a glass column

Potential processes for the pilot-plant-scale purification and concentration of nitric acid condensate and raffinate solutions were studied. As a result, a process was developed where condensates were continuously purified by an aluminum nitratecalcium nitrate trap to reduce 200 to 300-ppM fluoride concentrations to <1 ppM. Next, the condensates were fed to an all-glass rectification column to concentrate nitric acid to 14 molar and to reduce 200 10 400-ppM chloride concentrations to <1 ppM. Finally, raffinates were steam distilled and pyrohydrolyzed to recover >90% of the nitrates as nitric acid. (auth)

Corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking of welded uranium-6 weight percent niobium (open access)

Corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking of welded uranium-6 weight percent niobium

The resistance of corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking of welded U--6 wt% Nb in oxygen-saturated water containing 50 ppM chloride ions was investigated. The tests showed that a post-weld heat treatment consisting of solution quenching and underaging (350 deg C for 42 min) provided the best resistance to corrosion and pitting corrosion. Although selective corrosion and pitting corrosion were observed on many of the specimens tested, no evidence of stress-corrosion cracking was found. (auth)

Evaluation of the Cryofit tube joining system in selected plutonium chemical processing solutions (open access)

Evaluation of the Cryofit tube joining system in selected plutonium chemical processing solutions

The Ni-Ti alloy Cryofit joining system has been evaluated for corrosion resistance to selected solutions encountered in the chemical processing of plutonium. Results indicated the Cryofit system has useful resistance to Al(NO/ sub 3/)/sub 3/, H/sub 2/C/sub 2/O/sub 4/, KOH, and very dilute H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. The Cryofit system is not suitable for HNO/sub 3/ serv ice or for NH/sub 4/SCN service when used with 304 stainless steel. The Cryofit tube fitting system provides a means of connecting tubes and pipes without flanges, welds, or elevated temperatures. Permanent connections are made by removing a Cryofit coupling from liquid nitrogen and inserting the tubes to be joined into the ends of the coupling. As the coupling warms from liquid nitrogen to room temperature, it shrinks onto the tubing with tremendous force generated by intertnal stresses. (auth)

Lamb-wave inspection of welds in stainless steel tubes (open access)

Lamb-wave inspection of welds in stainless steel tubes

An ultrasonic Lamb-wave inspection technique was developed for use in inspecting the gas tungsten arc (GTA) welds in small diameter stainless steel tubes for lack of penetration. The particular technique was employed because of the ability to introduce the sound into the material a distance from the weld. A conventional shear-wave technique was tried without success. (auth)

Ingot beryllium-microstructural and mechanical property changes during can- rolling (open access)

Ingot beryllium-microstructural and mechanical property changes during can- rolling

Microstructural and mechanical property observations of ingotsource beryllium at selected points in the can-rolling process are reported. Recrystallization occur s concurrently with rolling at temperatures above 1800 deg F, and only partial recrystallization is observed during reheats at 1400 deg F. Most grain refinement induced by the rolling schedule occurs in the first 15 rolling passes. These represent 88 percent reduction from the ingot. A relatively small contribution comes from the final six passes which bring the total reduction from the ingot to 95 percent. Information was also obtained on the effects of the rolling schedule on the properties of the stainless steel can. (auth)

Acoustic emission energy to pulse height converter (open access)

Acoustic emission energy to pulse height converter

An enengy-to-pulse-height converter was developed for use in acoustic emission testing. This instrument accepts an amplified signal from a piezoelectric crystal and generates a pulse whose amplitude is propontional to either the energy or width of the input signal. Either linear or logarithmic responses can be selected. Theory, circuit design, and performance specifications have been determined, based on calculations and measurements. (auth)
