Design and fabrication of target elements for PT-645-D (open access)

Design and fabrication of target elements for PT-645-D

Target elements were designed and built to fit into 1.25% U{sup 235} driver elements. These targets had an aluminum -- 0.583% lithium alloy core enriched to 63.5% in Li. The targets had a coextruded aluminum jacket as a tritium barrier and a Zircaloy jacket as a corrosion barrier to the 300 C reactor water.

Design criteria for coolant backup three remaining smaller reactors. Revision 1 (open access)

Design criteria for coolant backup three remaining smaller reactors. Revision 1

This document defines the objectives, bases, and functional requirements that shall govern the preparation of design of the coolant backup system for the three remaining smaller reactors. This project will increase the reliability of the coolant backup facility at B Area by providing an independent last-ditch coolant system to B and C Reactors. The reliability of the last-ditch system for D Reactor will also be improved in that the present F and H leg of the export system will no longer be a part of the new export system. The objective of this document is to define the operational and technical requirements of the new facility and to describe the functional requirements of the proposed coolant backup system for the purpose of design.

Production test IP-543-A effluent sampling -- overbore tube. Final report (open access)

Production test IP-543-A effluent sampling -- overbore tube. Final report

It had been postulated that the increased film area of a charged overbore tube would be counterbalanced by the lower temperature fuel surface and decreased flux so that the radioisotope content of the effluent would be the same as that from a normal tube. In order to confirm or deny the postulate, Tube 3267-C was equipped with an effluent sample line under the provisions of PT-IP-543-A. Sampling and analytical work began in mid-April and continued through November, 1963. Effluent samples obtained from an overbore tube at C Reactor over a nine-month period were analyzed for P{sup 32}, As{sup 76} Np{sup 239} and Cr{sup 51}. Based on the results obtained for these isotopes, it can be concluded that the radioisotope content of the effluent from an overbore tube will be the same as the radioisotope content of the effluent from a normal size tube operating under similar conditions.

Technical bases: U-233 production study, Group V

Group V is the designation assigned locally to the fifth of a series of recent U-233 production studies requested by the Division of Production. The scope of this study is given in a teletype from F. P. Baranowski to J. E. Travis, which was sent on May 28, 1964 and reported to General Electric on June 1, 1964. The text is as follows: DRD has just advised that clean U-233 for seed and blanket program is wanted at early dates, as follows: 160 kg by April--July 1965; and 40 kg by July--September 1965. Both batches would be requested at 3 to 5 ppM of U-232. The DRD Branch requesting this material insists the dates are important. However, approval for production program will be via staff paper route, and authorization to proceed may not be available until late June. Considering these circumstances, please advise: (a) portions of above quantities your site could deliver as nitrate by above dates; (b) schedules on which you could deliver half of the quantities; (c) schedules on which you could deliver the full quantities; (d) pre-authorization steps recommended to expedite program. Please provide schedules that could be reasonably guaranteed, since they could become commitments. Consider possible …
