Preliminary Summary of Reconnaissance for Uranium in Arizona (open access)

Preliminary Summary of Reconnaissance for Uranium in Arizona

From introduction: A reconnaissance of Arizona uranium deposits was started in October 1950 and continued through April 1951. A total of six man--months was spent by H. C. Granger, E. P. Kaiser, and J. W. Adams. About 40 properties were examined and, of these, six were mapped by plane-table method and six were sketch-mapped. This reconnaissance was not intended as a complete evaluation of all Arizona deposits; other areas and occurrences were not examined during the investigations and are not discussed in this report.

Geological Investigation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona with Diamond Drilling Recommendations (open access)

Geological Investigation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona with Diamond Drilling Recommendations

Abstract: The Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona, was examined to determine size, grade, and distribution of contained carnotite deposits and the possibilities of developing reserves by exploratory drilling. Only three occurrences of carnotite-bearing sandstone were found in 17 miles of rim outcrop. Limited drilling is recommended in the vicinity of these exposures.

The Effects of Atomic Weapons on Glazing and Window Construction. Annex 3.5 of Scientific Director's Report of Atomic Weapon Tests at Eniwetok. 1951. Operation Greenhouse (open access)

The Effects of Atomic Weapons on Glazing and Window Construction. Annex 3.5 of Scientific Director's Report of Atomic Weapon Tests at Eniwetok. 1951. Operation Greenhouse

BS>Various types of wood, steel, and aluminum window construction, glazed with plastic and different kinds of glass, were installed on four sides of a test structure during the greenhouse tests in order to determine their relative resistance to an atomic blast. The degree of protection from flying glass provided by mounting Venetian blinds, insect screens, and 1/4-in. mesh wire netting on the inside of window openings was also determined. The best results seem to indicate that the resistances of different types of glass to an atomic blast are approximately proportional to their strength in supporting static loads. Glass mounted in a rigid frame is less likely to be broken than if mounted in a flexible frame which may be distorted by the blast. Fragments from wire or safety glass are less dangerous to personnel than fragments from other types of glass, and plastic is less likely to break than glass, Commercial types of Venetian blinds and insect screens afforded littie or no protection against flying glass fragments at the distance at which tested; however, a blind with some of the parts reinforced and properly anchored to the window opening would. probably give some protection at a distance of 3 miles …

An Ion Exchange Study of Possible Hydridized 5f Bonding in theActinides (open access)

An Ion Exchange Study of Possible Hydridized 5f Bonding in theActinides

A study has been made of the elution behavior of curium(III), americium(III), plutonium(III), actinium(III), plutonium(IV), neptunium(IV), uraniuM(IV), thorium(IV), neptunium(V), plutonium (VI), uranium (VI), lanthanum(III), cerium(III), europium(III), ytterbium(III), ytterium(III), strontium(II), barium(II), radium(II), cesium(I) with 3.2 M, 6.2 M, 9.3 M, and 12.2 M HCl solutions from Dowex-50 cation exchange resin columns. These elutions show that in high concentrations of hydrochloric acid the actinides form complex ions with chloride ion to a much greater extent than the lanthanides. The strengths of the tripositive actinide complex ions apparently go in the order plutonium > americium> curium, although their ionic radii also decrease in this same order. To explain these results, a partial covalent character may be ascribed to the bonding in the transuranium complex ions. It is shown that a reasonable structure for such covalent bonding involves hybridization of the 5f orbitals in the actinide elements.

Development of Zirconium Alloys. Part 1 (open access)

Development of Zirconium Alloys. Part 1

A number of alloys of zirconium have been investigated as part of a program aimed at improving the high-temperature tensile strength of zirconium. These alloys include molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, tin, titanium, and nitrogen alloys. It was found that small additions of molybdenum, tantalum, tin, titanium, and nitrogen appreciably increase the high-temperature tensile strength of zirconium.

An Investigation of Aircraft Heaters 34: Experimental Determination of Thermal and Hydrodynamical Behavior of Air Flowing Between a Flat and a Wave-Shaped Plate

Report presenting an investigation of the thermal and hydrodynamical behavior of air flowing along a passage with one flat side, which was steam-heated, and one wave-shaped side, which was unheated. Two series of tests were conducted, one with the plates in direct opposition and one with the plates slightly separated, which induced turbulence upstream of the thermal boundary layer. Results regarding heat transfer and static-pressure drop are provided.

An investigation of aircraft heaters 36: preliminary investigation of a combustion-type aircraft heater

Report presenting experimental results on the thermal performance of an aircraft combustion-type heater. The performance of the heater with a counterflow and a parallel-flow return passage on the gas side does not appear predictable by use of existing equations. The thermal conductance for the gases within the combustion chamber is predicted to be many times lower than the experimental data indicate.

Statistical Fluctuation of Intensity in Debye-Scherrer Lines Due to Random Orientation of Crystal Grains

Note presenting an exploration of the Debye-Scherrer diagram of a stationary polycrystalline sample, which has an intensity distribution with an erratic line because of statistical irregularities of the crystal grain orientation. The fluctuations of intensity are discussed for the case that the only causes of line breadth are the natural spectral width of the primary radiation and the finite size of the grains.
