Aerodynamic heating and the deflection of drops by an obstacle in an air stream in relation to aircraft icing

From Summary: "Two topics of interest to persons attempting to apply the heat method of preventing ice formation on aircraft are considered. Surfaces moving through air at high speed are shown, both theoretically and experimentally, to be subject to important aerodynamic heating effects that will materially reduce the heat required to prevent ice. Numerical calculations of the path of water drops in an air stream around a circular cylinder are given. From these calculations, information is obtained on the percentage of the swept area cleared of drops."

An Autunite Deposit in the Rosamond Hills, Kern County, California

From introduction: An autunite deposit in the SW 1/4 sec. 25, T. 10 N., R. 13 W. San Bernardino meridian, was visited by F. M. Chace on May 6 and 15, 1950. The deposit is about 100 yards west of a north-south country road and is at an altitude of approximately 2,775 feet. The autunite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone strikes N. 35-40 W. and dips 20 -25 SW. It has been traced about 40 feet along the strike at the base of the outcrop and for about 20 feet up the dip. Insufficient work was done to give an accurate idea of the size of the deposit or to determine if other autunite-bearing beds are present.

Geology of the Kettleman Hills Oil Field, California: Stratigraphy, Paleontology, and Structure

From Introduction: The field work that furnished the basis for this report was begun in 1930 and was continued at intervals until 1934. The anticlinal character of the Kettleman Hills is apparent to even the casual observer, but the many structural complications due to an intricate network of minor faults, at least in North Dome and Middle Dome, are much less obvious. Though it is improbable that these faults have any relation to the occurrence of oil, an attempt was made to map them, not only to represent the structure adequately but also because the stratigraphy could not be understood if they were neglected. Faunal zones were particularly useful in mapping. On the other hand, some lithologic units proved to be more persistent than had been expected. The two sets of features-fossils and lithology-served as checks on each other.

Preliminary Tests in the NACA Tank to Investigate the Fundamental Characteristics of Hydrofoils

A preliminary investigation made to study the hydrodynamic properties and general behavior of simple hydrofoils. Six plain, rectangular hydrofoils were tested in a tank at various speeds, angles of attack, and depths below the water surface. The results are presented as curves of the lift and drag coefficients plotted against speed for various angles of attack and depths for which the hydrofoils were tested.

Drag testing was conducted in the high-speed wind tunnel of 23 conditions combining six streamline shapes and three conventional cowling-fuselage bodies. All of the models were tested in combination with a wing in order to include wing-fuselage interference effects. The critical speeds of combinations tested were, in general, determined by the wing-fuselage juncture.

The results showed that the required internal flow can be obtained with negligible ducting losses provided that basic principles are observed in designing the air passages.

It was found that good flow can be obtained in such ducts by (1) making the inlet opening of such size that the mean inlet velocity is about 0.6 the free-stream velocity and (2) providing vanes behind as well as ahead of the radiator. "A unit injector was operated under various test conditions with a cam outline giving a high rate of plunger displacement. The rate of discharge of the unit injector followed the plunger displacement for the outwardly opening injection valve (open nozzle) except under conditions of high fuel pressures when the effect of fuel compressibility decreased the rate of discharge as the pressure increased. The rate of discharge for the inwardly opening injection valve (closed nozzle) did not directly follow the plunger displacement" (p. 1).

"The use of different forms of wide-flange, thin-wall steel beams is becoming increasingly widespread. Part of the information necessary for a national design of such members is the knowledge of the stress distribution in and the equivalent width of the flanges of such beams. This problem is analyzed in this paper on the basis of the theory of plane stress. As a result, tables and curves are given from which the equivalent width of any given beam can be read directly for use in practical design" (p. 1).

"A total of 183 panel specimens of 24ST aluminum alloy with nominal thickness of 0.020, and 0.040 inch with extruded bulb-angle sections of 12 shapes spaced 4 and 5 inches as stiffeners were tested to obtain the buckling stress and the amplitude of the maximum wave when buckled. Bulb angles from 3 to 27 1/2 inches long were tested as pin-end columns. The experimental data are presented as stress-strain and column curves and in tabular form" (p. 1).

"A compilation of the experimentally determined moments of inertia of 32 airplanes is presented. The measurements were obtained at the laboratories of the NACA by means of a pendulum method. The airplanes tested are representative of several types of aircraft of gross weight less than 10,000 pounds. The results are presented in coefficient as well as in dimensional form. An elementary analysis of the data disclosed the possibility of grouping the results according to wing type of the airplane, as low-wing monoplanes, parasol and high-wing monoplanes, and biplanes" (p. 1).

"The magnitude, the direction, and the fluctuations of tow forces exerted upon gliders by towing them aloft behind an automobile were measured under a variety of conditions covering a range from gentle to severe types of operation. For these tests, the glider towing force did not exceed 1.6 of the gross weight of the glider. V-G records obtained during the towed-flight period as well as during the subsequent return glide to earth showed accelerations in the range from 3 to -1 g. The results of preliminary airplane tow tests are also presented" (p. 1).
