Interest is a guiding force in helping an individual to realize the pattern he is making through his day by day experiences. All children have not had the same experiences. They may or may not be interested in the same activity. It has been said that behavior is caused. If behavior is caused, then, to know the interests of children may be very valuable in diverting or guiding their activities which are desirable to help them better fit themselves to the society in which they live. Thus, the problem of this thesis is to discover the interests and activities of a seventh-grade group of boys and girls attending Huey School, Wichita Falls, Texas.

This thesis is a report on the study of the educational opportunities, problems, and handicaps which are peculiar to the environment of the Mexican child in Wichita Falls, Texas. The purpose of this study: It is a known a fact that the educational opportunities afforded the Mexican children in Wichita Falls, Texas are inferior to those afforded the white children or Negro children. The reason for this is the unsuccessful attempt to intersperse the Mexican child with the white children after they have completed the third grade. Naturally, because of racial, differences, aptitudes, and inherent characteristics, the Mexican children are at a distinct disadvantage in attempting to compete in an educational manner with their white brother. Much has been done toward curriculum revision and in the study of needed changes in the public school program for the white children, but very little has been done to find the needs or to meet the needs of the Mexican children, although he, too, is an American citizen in most cases and is subject to the same rights, privileges, and educational advantages as the white children.

The purpose of this study is three-fold: (1) to make a study of the attendance records of Latin American children in the Wichita Falls Public Schools to determine the extent of non-attendance and withdrawals; (2) to study factors causing this non-attendance and withdrawals; and (3) to plan some remedial measures to improve the educational opportunities and improve the attendance of these children.

Progressive concept of education -- The education of young children today is being interpreted in terms of child growth and development. It is no longer thought of as mental training primarily, but as the well-rounded development of each individual, physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally to the extent of his potentialities.

This investigation concerned two major interests of many classroom teachers today: the pupils' social maturity and their personality. The problem was to determine the apparent relationship between these two factors in pupils of the first, second, and third grades of eight elementary schools in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Children who learn best are physically, mentally, and emotionally adequate. In conjunction with this fact, this study attempts to show the relation that exists between the children from uncomfortable, unsatisfactory environments and those with comfortable, satisfactory environments.

The purpose of this study is to learn to what extent the point of view of patrons of Wichita Falls, Texas, has a background of progressivism or of essentialism and to what extent, if possible, the children are influenced in school by the point of view held by the parents; also which part of the school system -- general education, the curriculum, the child, or the administration -- has the most progressive approval of the parents.

This study has four main purposes: 1. To determine whether there is a preference for certain types of stories. 2. To find whether boys prefer one type story and girls another. 3. To determine whether the physical make-up or format of the book has any influence on the selection of books. 4. To find how these interests are related to classroom work.

The problem is to determine to what extent there is a relationship between a child's personality and his intelligence. As a basis for such a comparison, a study was made of sixty-two sixth-grade pupils in the Benjamin Franklin School in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The problem of this study is to determine the extent to which domination and persuasion are employed as methods of social control in fifteen Boy Scout troops in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The purposes of this study are: (1) to make an investigation of the home-room programs of the junior high schools in Wichita Falls, Texas, to discover what social guidance, if any, is offered to students; (2) to set up criteria for evaluating a social guidance program in a junior high school; and (3) to evaluate the social guidance programs of the home rooms in the junior high schools in Wichita Falls, Texas, in terms of the criteria set up for evaluation.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a functional home room citizenship program; to determine the changes to be made in one school year in the civic attitudes of a given group through an especially arranged curriculum.

The problem undertaken in this investigation is to determine the value of using audio-visual aids in the fifth-grade social studies program of the Austin Elementary School, Wichita Falls, Texas.

The problem under consideration is to determine the effect of certain environmental conditions upon the process of studying. This study attempts to answer the question, How much effect, positive or negative, will various environmental conditions have upon study?

The problem in this experiment is to try to determine if the use of certain materials during the first semester of the first school year of a group of children will cause the intelligence quotients and achievements of these children to improve.

The problem for this study is to determine whether or not teaching children to check arithmetic problems contributes to accuracy (1) in problem solving, (2) in forming the habit of checking, and (3) in several other phases of school work.

The problem under consideration attempts to answer the question: Will an original comic cartoon story used in classroom study of sixth grade arithmetic influence the amount of learning as much as the use of the ordinary text book?

This thesis has three main purposes: 1. to determine the progress made in achievement by each individual in the departmentalized and non-departmentalized groups; 2. to contrast the progress made in achievement by the groups under discussion; 3. to ascertain, by comparison of the two groups, whether any relative gain in achievement is made as a result of children working in the two different school organizations.

The problem of this study is to evaluate the methods of reporting pupil progress in the primary grades of Texas schools comparable in size to that of Wichita Falls, Texas, and to set up criteria from which could be developed a more desirable reporting system for the primary grades. The main purpose is to establish a more adequate program for parent-teacher-pupil relationship and understanding through a philosophy based on the development of the whole child.

This study attempts to determine to what extent the patrons of Iowa Park School are progressive or traditional in their educational thinking by obtaining at first hand their reactions to some of our present-day educational practices, which authorities in the field agree are progressive or traditional. It also attempts to determine whether such factors as sex and economic status influence educational attitudes of parents, and whether the parent's viewpoint affects the scholastic achievement of the child.

The purpose of this study was to make a comparison of the relative mastery of mathematical vocabulary with skills in general problem solving between two groups of sixth and seventh grade arithmetic students. An effort was made to determine to what extent knowledge of the mathematical vocabulary influenced skills in general problem solving.

The problem is to determine why fifteen lower grade pupils were absent from school so many times during the previous year and to ascertain whether the pupils' attendance records could be improved in the present year through arts and crafts.

The immediate purpose of this thesis is to show incomes and current living costs of teachers by geographical areas and to draw justified conclusions based upon statistical data regarding necessary and desirable teachers' salaries. Since the survey made by the Bureau of Business Research, University of Texas, included such widely separated cities as Corpus Christi, Austin, Tyler, El Paso, Lubbock, and Abilene, the different sections of the state are well represented.

In the main there are three questions to be answered in this investigation: First, what are the motives that have controlled the growth and development of the junior colleges in Texas? Second, what are the leading events in this development? Third, what is the present state of development of the junior college movement in Texas? A survey of the existing junior college situation in Texas is presented in the first chapter, while a more detailed history of development is outlined in the later chapters.
