The National Guard in America began in the Revolutionary War. The Texas units resulted from the earlier concept and emerged in 1835 to resist Mexican oppression. Following achievement of statehood, Texas militiamen served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. As the twentieth century began, Texans had a long history of service in reserve military organizations in spite of a prevailing attitude of contempt for citizen soldiers held by influential regular army officials.

A comparison was made between the results of an evaluation of performance and measure of job satisfaction found in the 1973 study by McPherson with the same population in 1975.

The purpose of this study is to trace the role of music and music education in Abilene, Texas, from 1881 to 1911. The research presents historical data relative to five categories: Educational music, cultural music, religious music, music of the vernacular, and music merchandising. The study utilizes personal interviews, newspaper files, city directories, local histories, photographs, city and county documents, school documents, minutes of public school board meetings, minutes of meetings of churches, school catalogues, articles in journals, unpublished works, and published books.
The Recent and Fossil Freshwater Gastropod Fauna of Texas

Twelve freshwater gastropod families, 39 genera and 70 fossil and Recent species are recognized and systematically treated. Keys to the families, genera and species were constructed and all species are illustrated. The purpose of this study was to synthesize and update the taxonomy, zoogeography, origins and correlations with drainage systems of the entire Recent and fossil freshwater gastropod fauna of Texas.
Life cycles of Zealeuctra claasseni (Frison), Zealeuctra hitei Ricker and Ross, and Perlesta placida (Hagen) (Plecoptera) in Texas

A thorough autelogical investigation of Zealuctra claasseni, Zealuctra hitei, and Perlesta placida life cycles was made with emphasis on special adaptive features to the harsh, dry climate of the southwestern United States. Z. claasseni was collected from a tributary of the Red River in Cooke County, Texas, and Z. hitei was collected from the upper reaches of North Pecan Creek in Wise County, Texas, Dec., 1974-Jun., 1978. Both streams were intermittent (except a 0.3 km stretch of the Red River tributary below a spring) running only during fall-winter 1974-1975 and 1976-1977.
A comparison of the desirability and feasibility of accountability measures as perceived by public school administrators and teachers

This study had three main purposes. The first was to determine the perceptions of public school administrators toward desirability and toward feasibility of accountability items. The second was to determine the perceptions of public school teachers toward desirability and toward feasibility of accountability items. The third was to compare the perceptions of administrators with those of teachers and to indicate areas where they seemed to be in agreement or disagreement.

This study is a history of the musical activities in the Territory of Oklahoma from 1889 to 1907. Material for this dissertation was gathered from newspapers, books, periodicals, letters, sheet music, concert programs, college catalogues, church records, and photographs. Oklahoma City and Guthrie, the most important cities of the territory, provide the locals for the greater part of the study. These two communities reflect the cultural tastes and activities of the entire territory.
