Caption: "Joseph Huckins Jr. (May, 1870 - Aug. 26, 1933) Hotel builder and operator was a native of St. Louis where his father was a hotel magnate. Hickins came here in 1906 after Shreveport. He bought the Lee hotel and ran it until it burned in August, 1908. In cooperation with the three brothers he then built the Huckins hotel here and acquired others until at one time the Huckins chain included the pricipal hotels in Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, Enid, Omaha, Little Rock and San Francisco."

Baily, turnpike manager, said first day's use of the 58-mile four-lane superhighway between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, was nearly four times greater than the 2,500-cars-a-day average estimated by engineers for purchasers of the turnpike bonds. Audit of cash taken in at the six entrances will not be completed until late monday, but Bailey said he was hopeful the total would be close to $12,000. The novelty of the new super-smooth highway with a top speed limit of 70 miles an hour, couples with the return of sunshiny weather drew thousands of Oklahomans out for a drive.The heaviest play was coming from the Tulsa end where 3,832 vehicles were counted through the gates between official opening at 3 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
