In Texas, the economic impact of the moving media industry approached $345 million in 2007. This article investigates the impact of nutrient intake on hydration biomarkers in cyclists before and after a 161 km ride, including one hour after a 650 mL water bolus consumed post-ride. Most predictor groups showed significant association with at least one hydration biomarker: (1) Glycemic Load + Carbohydrates + Sodium, (2) Protein + Fat + Zinc, (3) Magnesium + Calcium, (4) Pinitol, (5) Caffeine, (6) Fiber + Betaine, and (7) Water; potassium + three polyols, and mannitol + sorbitol showed no significant associations with any hydration biomarker. The authors conclude that in a real-life scenario, some nutrients may serve as mediators of body water, and urine-specific hydration biomarkers may be more responsive to nutrient intake than measures derived from plasma or body mass.

These grant materials were prepared for the National Digital Newspaper Program, a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to provide access to historic American Newspapers. The Library of Congress serves as the technical adviser for the NDNP. NEH designated this proposal a “We the People” grant, and it was provided by NEH as an example grant in the following year’s grant round. The award funded digitization of Texas historical newspapers. For the grant, UNT served as the lead institution with partners at the Center for American History at the University of Texas, and Texas Tech University. This proposal was funded for $397,552.

This report discusses the questionnaire for the IOGENE Project. From September 26, 2008 through June 26, 2009, an online survey questionnaire captured both demographic data from Portal visitors as well as their opinions regarding the utility of the Portal and their satisfaction with it. The objective of this data collection effort was twofold: to characterize Portal users and to establish baseline measurements for user satisfaction. The survey will be repeated following each of two planned releases of the redesigned Portal, one in the summer of 2009 and the second in the fall of 2009. Comparison of future survey results to the baseline results reported in this paper will be one gauge of the success of the IOGENE project.
