Geologic History of the Yosemite Valley (open access)

Geologic History of the Yosemite Valley

The principal result of the investigations upon which this report is based is the determination within narrow limits of the preglacial depth of the Yosemite Valley and of other facts concerning its preglacial development which permit fairly definite estimates of the proportionate shares of work performed by stream and by glacier. The investigations comprise a detailed survey of the glacial and geomorphologic features of the Yosemite region and an equally intensive study of its rock formations, supplemented by reconnaissance work of both kinds in adjoining parts of the Sierra Nevada.

Geology of the Gerstle River District, Alaska, with a Report on the Black Rapids Glacier (open access)

Geology of the Gerstle River District, Alaska, with a Report on the Black Rapids Glacier

From abstract: The area here described includes most of the north side of the Alaska Range between the Delta and Johnson Rivers, in one direction, and the axis of the Alaska Range and the Tanana River in the other. Besides the Delta River, its principal streams are Jarvis Creek, the Gerstle and Little Gerstle Rivers, and, at the extreme east, the Johnson River, all of which have glacial sources.

Lithologic Studies of Fine-Grained Upper Cretaceous Sedimentary Rocks of the Black Hills Region (open access)

Lithologic Studies of Fine-Grained Upper Cretaceous Sedimentary Rocks of the Black Hills Region

More than nine-tenths of the Upper Cretaceous rocks in northeastern Wyoming are fine-grained shales, mudstones, and calcareous marls. A comparative study of the mineralogy, chemical and mechanical composition, density and porosity, fissility, and lamination of samples of these rocks discloses several relations that throw light on the geologic history and structural deformation of the region, and perhaps on its oil and gas possibilities.

Mollusca From the Miocene and Lower Pliocene of Virginia and North Carolina: Part 1. Pelecypoda (open access)

Mollusca From the Miocene and Lower Pliocene of Virginia and North Carolina: Part 1. Pelecypoda

Abstract: A brief sketch of the stratigraphy of the Miocene of Virginia and the Miocene and Pliocene of North Carolina was prepared by Dr. W. C. Mansfield before his death in July 1939. His purpose was "to provide a background of formational nomenclature" for the taxonomic treatment of the molluscan faunas. The physical nature and distribution of the upper Tertiary formations within those States are discussed, characteristic sections given, and diagnostic molluscan species listed. Part 1 of the systematic report covers the Pelecypoda. A monographic treatment is not attempted, but 132 previously known species are considered, and 62 new species and subspecies are described and figured.

Lode Deposits of the Fairbanks District, Alaska (open access)

Lode Deposits of the Fairbanks District, Alaska

From abstract: To help the mining industry of Alaska and to assist in the development of the mineral resources of the Territory have been the prime motives of the Geological Survey's investigations in Alaska during the past 35 years, in which nearly one half of the Territory has been covered by its reconnaissance and exploratory surveys. It was natural, therefore, that the Alaska Railroad, when it undertook intensive consideration of the problem of finding tonnage that would increase its revenues, should look to the Geological Survey to supply technical information as to the known mineral deposits along its route and to indicate what might be done to stimulate a larger production of minerals and induce further mining developments and prospecting that would utilize its service.

Geology of the southern Guadalupe Mountains, Texas

From Abstract: "This report deals with an area of 425 square miles in the western part of Texas, immediately south of the New Mexico line. The report describes the geology of the area, that is, the nature of its rocks, tectonics, and surface features, and the evidence that they give as to the evolution of the area through geologic time. Incidental reference is made to the geology of surrounding regions in order to place the area in its environment."
