Oral History Interview with Lillie Aleman, July 11, 2016

Lillie Ann Aleman was born in 1942 in Forth Worth and would migrate to Galveston when she was four years old. Her father, Pedro Enriquez, was a WWII veteran who became active in the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council #151 and defended equal employment opportunities. Aleman would become active in LULAC after her mother, Tomasa Lozano Enriquez, co-founded LULAC women's council #639 and encouraged Aleman to become involved. She talks about instances of discrimination while growing-up on the island, how LULAC merged the councils in 1999, how she was designated as "LULAC Woman of the Year" due to her participation in several initiatives, how she became president of the merged LULAC council, and her engagement in cross-racial efforts to address affordable housing after Hurricane Ike. Aleman also speaks about voting rights, youth programs, and national LULAC's political agenda.

On May 4, 2018, a recognition ceremony was held for the LEAP (Library Education for the U.S. Affiliated Pacific) II scholars, who earned their Master's in Library Science degree from UNT. Video messages were sent to the students by their UNT professors who taught them at the Institutes in Hawaii. This video recording of the military story of Abilene was presented in three parts. The first part of the story was presented by Jerri Alexander, who talked about Fort Phantom Hill, the 1850s army fort now owned by the Alexander family. Mike Myers, a graduate student in history at Hardin-Simmons University spoke about the World War II installation known as Camp Barkeley. Lt. Pam Fenner introduced and spoke of the history of Dyess Air Force Base, the SAC installation and home of the C-130s and B-1 bombers located in Abilene after the close of Camp Barkeley.

Ms. Ali was born in Beford, Texas. She was raised in her family's community, County Line, outside of Nacogdoches. Ms. Ali went to Cushing High School, UT-Austin, and is currently a librarian at the Nacogdoches Public Library. She is also a hip-hop artist. In her interview, Ms. Ali described the rich history of her family's community, dating back to newly freed slaves moving in from Tennessee. She relates stories of racism and violence as well as community building and endurance. Her personal account describes racism at Cushing schools in the 2000s and her efforts to build a sustainable homestead for herself in County Line.

She transferred to Huston–Tillotson University in Austin, where she met her husband, and graduated with a BA in English. She and her husband moved to Amarillo after he was recruited as a coach. She coached girls' basketball and taught English in Amarillo and was involved with Greek Letter organizations as well as the NAACP.
