Method for determining the hardness of strain hardening articles of tungsten-nickel-iron alloy (open access)

Method for determining the hardness of strain hardening articles of tungsten-nickel-iron alloy

The present invention is directed to a rapid nondestructive method for determining the extent of strain hardening in an article of tungsten-nickel-iron alloy. The method comprises saturating the article with a magnetic field from a permanent magnet, measuring the magnetic flux emanating from the article, comparing the measurements of the magnetic flux emanating from the article with measured magnetic fluxes from similarly shaped standards of the alloy with known amounts of strain hardening to determine the hardness.

Improved solvent extraction recovery of shale oil. [DOE patent application] (open access)

Improved solvent extraction recovery of shale oil. [DOE patent application]

An improved process for solvent extraction of organic matter from shale by two extraction steps in sequence. The extraction steps are: (1) treating a kerogen-containing shale with a solvent system comprising a combination of water and an alcohol at a temperature of about 375 to 425/sup 0/C; and (2) treating the product of (1) with a solvent system comprising a combination of an alcohol and another organic solvent at an elevated temperature, but not above about 425/sup 0/C. The organic matter is recovered by separating the liquid which results from step (2) from the shale solids.

Control of temperature and heat flux in a combustor using coal-derived gas of varying heat content. [Patent application] (open access)

Control of temperature and heat flux in a combustor using coal-derived gas of varying heat content. [Patent application]

The present invention is directed to a fuel-air control system for a combustor in which coal-derived gas of varying heat content is used. To maintain the temperature in the combustor at an essentially constant value the fuel-to-air ratio is adjusted by using a temperature actuated variable pressure regulator in the gas feed line to compensate for the variability of the heat content of the gas. The velocity of the products of combustion is maintained at an essentially constant flow rate by controlling the mass flow of the air and fuel through linked valves on the gas and air feed lines.

High-temperature electrically conductive ceramic composite and method for making same (open access)

High-temperature electrically conductive ceramic composite and method for making same

The present invention relates to a metal-oxide ceramic composition useful in induction heating applications for treating uranium and uranium alloys. The ceramic composition is electrically conductive at room temperature and is nonreactive with molten uranium. The composition is prepared from a particulate admixture of 20 to 50 vol. % niobium and zirconium oxide which may be stabilized with an addition of a further oxide such as magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, or yttria. The composition is prepared by blending the powders, pressing or casting the blend into the desired product configuration, and then sintering the casting or compact in an inert atmosphere. In the casting operation, calcium aluminate is preferably added to the admixture in place of a like quantity of zirconia for providing a cement to help maintain the integrity of the sintered product.

Gamma-thermometer-based reactor-core liquid-level detector. [PWR] (open access)

Gamma-thermometer-based reactor-core liquid-level detector. [PWR]

A system is provided which employs a modified gamma thermometer for determining the liquid coolant level within a nuclear reactor core. The gamma thermometer which normally is employed to monitor local core heat generation rate (reactor power), is modified by thermocouple junctions and leads to obtain an unambiguous indication of the presence or absence of coolant liquid at the gamma thermometer location. A signal processor generates a signal based on the thermometer surface heat transfer coefficient by comparing the signals from the thermocouples at the thermometer location. The generated signal is a direct indication of loss of coolant due to the change in surface heat transfer when coolant liquid drops below the thermometer location. The loss of coolant indication is independent of reactor power at the thermometer location. Further, the same thermometer may still be used for the normal power monitoring function.

Coolant monitoring apparatus for nuclear reactors. [PWR; BWR] (open access)

Coolant monitoring apparatus for nuclear reactors. [PWR; BWR]

A system for monitoring coolant conditions within a pressurized vessel is described. A length of tubing extends outward from the vessel from an open end containing a first line restriction at the location to be monitored. The flowing fluid is cooled and condensed before passing through a second line restriction. Measurement of pressure drop at the second line restriction gives an indication of fluid condition at the first line restriction. Multiple lengths of tubing with open ends at incremental elevations can measure coolant level within the vessel.

Transistorized power switch and base drive circuit therefore

A high power switching circuit is disclosed which utilizes a four-terminal Darlington transistor block to improve switching speed, particularly in rapid turn-off. Two independent reverse drive currents are utilized during turn-off in order to expel the minority carriers of the Darlington pair at their own charge sweep-out rate. The reverse drive current may be provided by a current transformer, the secondary of which is tapped to the base terminal of the power stage of the Darlington block. In one application, the switching circuit is used in each power switching element in a chopper-inverter drive of an electric vehicle propulsion system.

Nuclear reactor fuel-assembly duct-tube-to-handling-socket attachment system. [LMFBR] (open access)

Nuclear reactor fuel-assembly duct-tube-to-handling-socket attachment system. [LMFBR]

A reusable system is described for removably attaching the upper end of a nuclear reactor duct tube to the lower end of a nuclear reactor fuel assembly handling socket. A transition ring, fixed to the duct tube's upper end, has an interior-threaded section with a first locking hole segment. An adaptor ring, fixed to the handling socket's lower end has an outside-threaded section with a second locking hole segment. The inside and outside threaded sections match and can be joined so that the first and second locking hole segments can be aligned to form a locking hole. A locking ring, with a locking pin, slides over the adaptor ring so that the locking pin fits in the locking hole. A swage lock or a cantilever finger lock is formed from the locking cup collar to fit in a matching groove in the locking ring to prevent the locking ring's locking pin from backing out of the locking hole.

System for utilizing shale oil fines. [Patent application] (open access)

System for utilizing shale oil fines. [Patent application]

A system is provided for utilizing fines of carbonaceous materials such as particles or pieces of oil shale of about one-half inch or less diameter which are rejected for use in some conventional or prior surface retorting process, which obtains maximum utilization of the energy content of the fines and which produces a waste which is relatively inert and of a size to facilitate disposal. The system includes a cyclone retort which pyrolyzes the fines in the presence of heated gaseous combustion products, the cyclone retort having a first outlet through which vapors can exit that can be cooled to provide oil, and having a second outlet through which spent shale fines are removed. A burner connected to the spent shale outlet of the cyclone retort, burns the spent shale with air, to provide hot combustion products that are carried back to the cyclone retort to supply gaseous combustion products utilized therein. The burner heats the spent shale to a temperature which forms a molten slag, and the molten slag is removed from the burner into a quencher that suddenly cools the molten slag to form granules that are relatively inert and of a size that is convenient to handle …

Improved method of preparing composite superconducting wire (open access)

Improved method of preparing composite superconducting wire

An improved method of preparing composite multifilament superconducting wire of Nb/sub 3/Sn in a copper matrix which eliminates the necessity of coating the drawn wire with tin is described. A generalized cylindrical billet of an alloy of copper containing at least 15 weight percent niobium, present in the copper as discrete, randomly distributed and oriented dendritic-shaped particles, is provided with at least one longitudinal opening which is filled with tin to form a composite drawing rod. The drawing rod is then drawn to form a ductile composite multifilament wire containing a filament of tin. The ductile wire containing the tin can then be wound into magnet coils or other devices before heating to diffuse the tin through the wire to react with the niobium forming Nb/sub 3/Sn. Also described is an improved method for making large billets of the copper-niobium alloy by consumable-arc casting.
