Deposition of plutonium in the lung of a worker following an accidental inhalation exposure (open access)

Deposition of plutonium in the lung of a worker following an accidental inhalation exposure

The deposition of PuO/sub 2/ in the lungs of an occupationally exposed worker is characterized by assay for plutonium in excreta samples and from in vivo measurements of /sup 241/Am in the thoracic region. Chelation therapy by intravenous injection of 1 gm Ca-DTPA was initially performed shortly after the incident and repeated using 0.5 gm of the chelate four additional times in subsequent days post intake. Analysis of the air sampler filter retrieved from the site of the exposure identified the isotopic composition and particle size of the plutonium material inhaled by the worker. Chelation with Ca-DTPA did not significantly reduce the magnitude of the lung or systemic deposition as determined from assay of plutonium in urine samples collected from the worker. In vivo measurements for /sup 241/Am verify the retention of the inhaled material in the lung and also indicate the ingrowth of an amount of /sup 241/Am as a daughter product of the /sup 241/Pu initially inhaled.

Development of the standard inhalation chamber. [Brief review]

Various designs of inhalation chambers developed since the Manhattan Project are discussed. Essential features of current inhalation chambers are illustrated. It is stated that technology is available to control almost any variable in inhalation studies, although cost factors must be taken into consideration when experiments are designed. (JGB)

DI-TERTIABYBUTYLNITROXIDE, A HILL REAGENT (open access)

DI-TERTIABYBUTYLNITROXIDE, A HILL REAGENT

Di-tertiarybutylnitroxide (DTBN), which they have tried to use as a trapping agent to identify the species giving rise to the photo-induced EPR signals in photosynthetic materials, functions as a Hill reagent with spinach chloroplasts. Evidence is presented which indicates that the reduction of DTBN is affected by photosystem II of the electron transport system of spinach chloroplasts. The reduced form of DTBN, the hydroxylamine, undergoes a photo-oxidation with spinach chloroplasts. Possible explanations of this apparent inconsistency are presented. A product which could be ascribed to a chemical coupling reaction between the nitroxide and the radical species giving rise to the photo-induced EPR signals in spinach chloroplasts was not detected, even using radioactive tracer methods.

Direct measurement of the fraction of radon loss in ceramics by gamma-ray spectroscopy (open access)

Direct measurement of the fraction of radon loss in ceramics by gamma-ray spectroscopy

Work is reported which deals with an alternative method of measuring the amount of radon loss in ceramics and clays and results from several types of sherds are presented. The gamma rays emitted by all the radioisotopes naturally present in sherds were measured, the gamma emission rates from radioisotopes preceding and following the radon in the natural series were calculated, and these rates in cases where the escape of radon was (a) prevented and (b) favored were compared. Results indicate that there was no radon loss within the accuracy limits of the experiment for any of the samples during a pumping period of up to 24 days. This rules out the possibility of appreciable radon diffusion with a diffusion mean life less than an order of magnitude greater than the half life of /sup 222/Rn for these sherds. In addition, two samples of powder were specifically included to see if crushed sherds or unfired clay would influence radon loss. There was no observable radon loss with these samples.

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) (open access)

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Article exploring the degree to which diminished cardiac function contributes to the reduction in fish swimming performance concomitant with acute exposure to hypoxia and how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is altered by, or adapts to, chronic hypoxia. Results provide important insights into how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is impacted by short-term and prolonged exposure to hypoxia, and highlight the capacity of the fish cardiorespiratory system to deal with environmental challenges.

Energetic control of intact chloroplast photosynthesis (open access)

Energetic control of intact chloroplast photosynthesis

The induction phase of photosynthesis was studied in intact chloroplasts isolated from spinach. Within 15 sec of illumination, stromal ADP is phosphorylated to give an ATP/ADP ratio of 1.4. A transthylakoid pH gradient of about 4.1 units developed during the first min, and was associated with a low note of linear electron flow from H/sub 2/O to NADP/sup +/. In the following 2 to 3 min, both the pH gradient and ATP/ADP ratio declined to new steady state levels (3.9 pH units and a ratio of 0.9), whereas O/sub 2/ evolution rose rapidly to 110 ..mu..mol/mg chlorophyll-h. Prolonging the induction phase by omission of catalase or by addition of 2 mM phosphate resulted in a high pH gradient and ATP/ADP ratio. Ribose 5-phosphate is known to reverse partial inhibition resulting from catalase omission or high phosphate, hence its effect on the pH gradient and ATP/ADP ratio was investigated. Ribose 5-phosphate was found to lower both these parameters under conditions chosen to restrict turnover of the carbon cycle. This result with ribose 5-phosphate underscores the importance of its product, ribulose 5-phosphate and the carboxylation product, 3-phosphoglycerate, in serving as sinks for ATP and thereby preventing inhibition of electron flow by an …

Enhanced gasification of wood in the presence of mixed catalysts (open access)

Enhanced gasification of wood in the presence of mixed catalysts

Experimental results obtained in laboratory investigations of steam gasification of wood in the presence of mixed catalysts are presented. These studies are designed to test the technical feasibility of producing specific gaseous products from wood by enhancing its reactivity and product specificity through the use of combined catalysts. The desired products include substitute natural gas, hydrocarbon synthesis gas and ammonia synthesis gas. The gasification reactions are controlled through the use of specific catalyst combinations and operating parameters. A primary alkali carbonate gasification catalyst impregnated into the wood combined with specific commercially available secondary catalysts produced the desired products. A yield of 50 vol % methane was obtained with a randomly mixed combination of a commercial nickel methanation catalyst and silica-alumina cracking catalyst at a weight ratio of 3:1 respectively. Steam gasification of wood in the presence of a commercial Si-Al cracking catalyst produced the desired hydrocarbon synthesis gas. Hydrogen-to-carbon monoxide ratios needed for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons were obtained with this catalyst system. A hydrogen-to-nitrogen ratio of 3:1 for ammonia synthesis gas was achieved with steam-air gasification of wood in the presence of catalysts. The most effective secondary catalyst system employed to produce the ammonia synthesis gas included two commercially …

Failure analysis of an elbow tube fitting (open access)

Failure analysis of an elbow tube fitting

This article discusses elbow tube fitting. Abstract: Safe operation of machinery depends strongly on the design of the system and the employement of proper components and materials. Unique to fluid powered systems are the proper selection of hydraulic lines, fittings, and control valves. This paper describes the cause of fracture in an elbow tube fittings due to deficiencies in the dimensional design and materials selection. The investigation included metallography, fractography, hardness testing and metrology. The results showed that the material was low carbon steel subjected to cold forming and normalized annealing processes during tube production. There were dimensional variations in the tube and the material strength was low.
