An Exploratory Study of Perceptual and Cognitive Features in Near-Death Experiences: A Proposed Model and Research Recommendations

Abstract: This exploratory study was based on the cognitive and perceptual characteristics of 50 cases of near-death experiences (NDEs) collected through the International Association for Near-Death Studies-France. This study resulted in the formulation of a model of perception based on the concept of "global perception" or "global acquisition of information." Further analysis showed that this model is consistent with the concept that these perceptions are not purely hallucinatory but are, in part, modified perceptions of reality. Several clues are then proposed to explain how this type of information could be processed at the cerebral level and beyond. Finally, we offer a clinical research protocol, including a test that could lead to irrefutable proof of veridical perception during NDEs.

Reasonable Inferences from Quantum Mechanics: A Response to "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature"

Abstract: This invited article is a response to the paper "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature," by Jack A. Mroczkowski and Alexis P. Malozemoff, published in this issue of the Journal of Near-Death Studies. Whereas I sympathize with Mroczkowski's and Malozemoff's cause and goals, and I recognize the problem that they attempted to tackle, I argue that their criticisms often overshot the mark and end up adding to the confusion. I address nince specific technical points that Mroczkowski and Malozemoff accused popular writers in the fields of health care and parapsychology of misunderstanding and misrepresenting. I argue that, by and large--and contrary to Mroczkowski's and Malozemoff's claims--the statements made by these writers are often reasonable and generally consistent with the current state of play in foundations of quantum mechanics.

Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature

Abstract: In this paper, we address an unfortunate growing trend involving misuse of quantum physics in psychic and healing literature, including literature on near-death experiences. After a brief introduction to quantum physics, we provide examples and explanations of misuse. Such misuse encourages undue skepticism of what might otherwise be valuable reading. We conclude with recommendations to authors and publishers about how to guard against this problem.

Abstract: As one of the authors whose work the two retired physicists Jack A. Mroczkowski and Alexis P. Malozemoff (2019) discussed in their article "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature," which appears elsewhere in this journal issue, I appreciate the invitation to write this response. In it I will offer my views on quantum physics and the role of consciousness, further information about studies pertaining to near-death experiences (NDEs) and consciousness in general, and several quotations from my book that substantiate my use of quantum physics as analogy rather than established fact as it pertains to consciousness.

Giant cross-magnetic-field steps due to binary collisions between pair particles

Article explores giant cross-magnetic-field steps which occur as a result of positron-electron collisions. Within a constant magnetic field (e.g., 1 T), a collision between a positron and an electron can result in a correlated drift across the magnetic field for a continuous range of impact parameters. Within this range, drift distances orders of magnitude larger than that associated with like-charge collisions were observed by computer simulation.

Magnetic plasma expulsion

The article presents one scheme for what is referred to as magnetic plasma expulsion, which would prevent the plasma from entering a given region. Magnetic plasma expulsion techniques may allow instrumentation access to the interiors of plasmas. Magnetic plasma expulsion techniques may also make alternative approaches for magnetic plasma confinement possible. Particle-in-cell simulation with the Warp code is used to study magnetic plasma expulsion. Some conditions for achieving magnetic plasma expulsion are reported.

Energy Conversion During Expansion of a Solid-Particle-Entrained Gas

This article describes pneumatic energy being converted into solid particle kinetic energy as a solid-particle-entrained gas that flows downward through a vertical nozzle. For the conditions studied, the solid particles serve as a heat exchange medium to enable a gas expansion that is nearly isothermal. Also, the kinetic energy associated with the two-phase fluid is predominantly that associated with subsonic solid-particle motion. The kinetic energy of the solid particles is converted into other forms using a low-speed turbine. A theoretical description of the process is presented, and the initiation of an experimental effort to study the process is described.

A novel benzimidazole derivative, MBIC inhibits tumor growth and promotes apoptosis via activation of ROS-dependent JNK signaling pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma

This study further explores a prior screening program carried out using MTT assay that identified a series of novel benzimidazole derivatives, among which Methyl 2-(5-fluoro-2-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carboxylate (MBIC) showed highest anticancer efficacy compared to that of chemotherapeutic agent, cisplatin. In this article, the authors find that MBIC inhibited cell viability in different hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines without exerting significant cytotoxic effects on normal liver cells. The results of this study demonstrate that MBIC may inhibit cell proliferation via ROS-mediated activation of the JNK signaling cascade in HCC cells.

Movement data were collected from GPS devices placed on foraging trips originating in the artisanal fishing village of Desa Ikan (pseudonym), on the east coast of the Caribbean island nation of the Commonwealth Dominica. The goal of the research is to understand how property rights are emerging after the introduction of fish aggregating device (FAD) technology at the site in 1999.

Apparent Specific Volumes of Sucrose in Different Aqueous Cosolvent Mixtures at 298.2 K

This article explores research to determine the apparent specific volume of sucrose by measuring the density of sucrose in {cosolvent + water} mixtures at 298.2 K. The study finds that a mean apparent specific volume value of 0.632 cm³.g⁻¹ for sucrose in different aqueous-cosolvent mixtures could be adequate for practical purposes in pharmaceutical industries.
