Abraham, Longdi, and Rilung Modi discuss the fern tree (Tatchi) harvest near Peki Modi village in Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. While Longdi Modi thwacks the fern tree into very small pieces, they describe the area where they found this fern tree, and how to determine suitable topography for growing and harvesting them. They mention the quality of fern trees, comparing a lower quality where the delicate part is harder (chisap) and a higher quality where the delicate part of fern tree is softer (chiingin).

Abraham, Longdi, and Rilung Modi discuss the fern tree (Tatchi) harvest near Peki Modi village in Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. They complete the process of thwacking and begin mixing the thwacked fern tree, making holes in the base so that the water will not stagnate. After that, the mixture is covered by the leaf of Sago tree to keep it clean and to protect from decay or damage. Longdi Modi, an expert in harvesting fern trees, explains that it takes a week until the mixture is fully ready for human consumption.

This is a traditional story about the origin of the division into Bey subclans. Bey Ki’ik and Bey Ke’et have a falling out over changing marriage plans as a result of the grandmother’s advice. As a result, a taboo exists such that descendants of Bey Ki’ik and those of Bey Ke’et are not allowed to marry each other. Another result is that members of the Bey Ronghang clan are not allowed to grind rice for rice beer, because in mythological times, the Bey Ronghang women kept grinding rice for rice beer without doing anything else--even forgetting to breast-feed their children, who then died from starvation.

Agriculture and livelihood

A discussion of agricultural practices amongst Lahu villagers. Some choose to plant their own small plots, but the elder encourages them to work together on larger plots. He reminds the villagers of an old saying that warns about rats and birds eating crops which aren't properly cultivated. They mention challenges like elephants trampling the crops, wild animals eating the crops, or the fields being burned by outsiders. They make plans to go hunting and scout different areas for planting in the new season.
