Ninety nine Generators

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Hugh le Caine's Ninety nine Generators. The title refers to the 99 organ sound generators sensitive keys - a separate generator for each note of the keyboard that can all be operated simultaneously. Le Caine here uses a resonance pedal and a device that can change the pitch to produce a vibrato or long glissandi impossible to achieve on an organ. The particular reverb of this piece is caused by the unusual acoustics of the place where it was realized.

Aux lampions

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Bertand Dubedout's "Aux lampions" ("To the lanterns"). Lampions are small oil lamps, formerly popular as a carriage light. It is a concrete piece in three movements: "Bal convexe" ("Convex ball"), "Le cocher" ("The coachman"), and "Sous les planches" ("Under the boards"). For writers like Bulgakov, Gogol, and Chekhov, the ball scene is often a story of action, tragedy, or desperation; the ball can ruin an existence or bring hope. Delight, delusion, and loneliness are the multiple stigmata of the ball. The sound materials of the piece are all concrete sounds that are based on reality. The sound forms escape any precedence, combining to create images of incongruous weddings like in an agitated dream.

Atelje II (Atelier II)

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Lojze Lebič's Atelje II (Atelier II) for tape. The piece was composed in collaboration with Paul Pignon in the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio in September 1975. It is made up of five sections, in which certain electroacoustic "instrumental" ideas are transformed through characteristic compositional procedures. The title has a twofold meaning: on one hand, it reveals the aims of the composer's research, considering that this was Lebič's first encounter with the electronic medium, and on the other, his expectations that the composition would be performed in the Concert Atelier cycle of the Society of Slovene composers. Atelier II was later expanded into Atelier III for magnetic tape and live violoncello performance.

Darkness after Time's Colours

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Denis Smalley's Darkness after Time's Colours. The piece can be looked on as a vocal journey which passes through various 'ordeals' and encounters, hence the title's allusion to the journey down into Classical underworld. The sound material of this piece grew out of live electroacoustic work Pneuma whose five vocalists elaborate a language of air sounds, unvoiced consonants and vocal harmonics, and play talking drums from India and Ghana, tuning forks, Chinese gongs and tam-tam. Many of these sounds formed a starting point for this piece - gong strokes, vocal air sounds, air blown on the skins of drums, rotations around drum skins, unvoiced consonants, and tuning fork pulsations - but have often been altered in shape and substance by electroacoustic transformation. New sounds extend, imitate, and penetrate the source sounds elaborating an ambiguous sound symbolism.
