Postcard of two houses behind a wall of lush flora. The first is cream colored with a red tiled roof. The second is two stories tall, with a balcony wrapping around the second floor, with white accents and brown roofing. The edges of the picture describe it as "Sherman and Halleck Headquarters and the Thomas O. Larkin House Monterey, California." The back of the postcard adds, "The Larkin House In 1832, Thomas O. Larkin came to Monterrey. He opened a Wholesale and Retail store, and became the first and only United States Consul to California. Next to the Larkin House, is an old adobe, built by Larkin in 1834. Here was headquartered William Tecumseh Sherman, when he was stationed at Monterey. At that time, the man who was later to be a famous Civil War General was a Lieutenant. General Halleck was also headquartered here. Sherman as a youth in Monterey, figured in one of Monterey's wistful legends."
