Informing McCarter and Davis the commitments that Denton ISD has made to NTIEVA. As such Sandra Parker will contribute 5% of her time during the 1992 school calendar to activities related to the staff development and implementation efforts of discipline-based art (DBAE). In addition, three art teachers will devote substation amount of time as well to NTIEVA. Enclosed in the letter is a stipend worksheet of the faculty salaries. Photocopy of a letter from Jack Davis and Bill McCarter, co-directors of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Char Woolery, Acting Superintendent for Dallas ISD. Davis and McCarter start the letter by congratulating Woolery on his new position as Acting Superintendent, giving him well wishes for the extremely important position. However, Davis and McCarter continue stating they are not thrilled with the principals participation in activities during the Summer Institutes. Stating that the leadership within the individual schools need an understanding of discipline-based art education and that they are planning a special day for administrators to construct the curriculum before any implementation can take place. Davis and McCarter have checked every district calendar in their consortium and determined that the administrator day would happen on June 8th, 1993, however, they regret to inform Woolery that Dallas principals will not be able to participate due to June 8th not being workable for them. Davis and McCarter then propose that they'd have another opportunity for the administrators specially for DISD in the fall. The letter ends with the promise of sending an invitation to the administrators of DISD at a later date.

In regards to Jenke loaning McCarter and Reynolds slide programs, video tapes and books from the museum. In turn McCarter and Reynolds ask of Jenke to make the materials available on loan for the teachers in the NTIEVA consortium as the information is invaluable. McCarter and Reynolds have included information for a Frequency of Use Report, for the National Gallery of Art of which NTIEVA is an affiliate of and loan materials from, hoping that Jenke will take their request into consideration.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter and Nancy Cason, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Chad Woolery, Deputy Superintendent of Dallas ISD. Appreciating the concern shown by the DISD's administration and the school board about preserving the visual arts program in Dallas Public Schools. McCarter and Cason write that Dallas is one of six consortium districts participating in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, NTIEVA, program. NTIEVA provides intensive summer institute training in discipline-based art education for elementary principals, art specialists, classroom teachers, and museum educators, while also assisting the implementation of integrative art programs during the school year. Public schools such as, T.D. Marshall, Colonial Learning Center, Lida Hooe, Maple Lawn and Sidney Lanier have sent teams to the summer institute program, along with other schools in attendance as well. McCarter and Cason finish the letter with how successful their institute is, writing that they've served a total of twenty elementary schools, impacting 500 teachers and 12,500 students, and that they're excited about their partnership with Dallas.

Rosenberg requests that Berry send her a memo with the information from her focus group about marketing for the national specialty programs. Rosenberg also requests details about the National Center being a separate entity from NTIEVA, that Berry proposed.

Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Leilani Lattin Duke, director of the Getty Center. McCarter writes that he has reviewed the draft of the National Arts Standards, paying close attention to the implication for aesthetics in art. Describing his recent trip to Canada, McCarter mentions that many presentations encountered the same problems in identifying common traits found in art. McCarter continues to say he does not see the dilemma in using the word aesthetic as it means various things to different people.

Thanking McCarter and co., for his invitation to a special Administrators Day at the Dallas Museum of Art, however, Woolery is concerned that there are only five of the Dallas I.S.D. areas being represented in the group of invitee and that within his letter he asks the area directors to ensure that all ten areas are included on that day by replacement or addition. Woolery ends the letter by stating that due to his schedule, it will not permit for his full attendance but he'll share lunch and some of the afternoon's agenda what he can. In regards to leaving her position at the Amon Carter and leaving Texas for southern California to work for the J. Paul Getty Museum as the Education Manager for Family, Teacher, and School Audiences. Perkins writes how sad she feels leaving her many friends, colleagues and the members of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts and hopes she can get together with McCarter before her departure.

To discuss the upcoming newsletter that Reynolds would like to distribute in September but needs information from Perkins on the Charlie Russell presentation scheduled for October. As well as inform Perkins that the institute is planning to offer a retreat for the consortium members at Ghost Ranch Conference Center in Abiquiu, New Mexico from March 14 - 18, 1993, and requests some Georgia O'Keefee's slides for a short presentation at the conference.

In discussion of the articles in Spirit that focus on activities in the area that Southwest Airline serves and they thought that Clark would be interested in the discipline-based art education, DBAE implementation project. Davis and McCarter go into further details about what North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts does for educators and the districts in the Texas state as well as where their funding and grants come from. Davis and McCarter write about the success their institute is having with the children and how their reading and writing have improved with the visual art program. Attached to the letter for Clark, they've added more information regarding their program and hoping Clark will be able to feature an article about it.

In regards to the institute putting together a video to show teachers who have not yet received training and they would like to include a video of Gill teaching language arts to her second graders into the reproduction with her permission. NTIEVA feels Gill's well-designed lesson will serve as an inspiring model for others and hoping Gill will contact them soon.

Thanking Wiggins for her time working with NTIEVA, and meeting with Dr. Brooks-Ray and Howard Dunn to discuss interest in the program for staff development. The Institute and the district face uncertain economic conditions but McCarter and Cason believe if they could stretch their first year budget they could pay a team member (kindergarten and first grade teacher, art specialist and principal) a stipend of $50 a day to attend the three-week institute during the summer. However, since Dallas was not written into the original implementation grant they will have to review it with the Getty Center and cannot promise continued support past the year.

In regards to a project which the NTIEVA initiated, that sought out high quality reproductions of work of at in five museums in the DFW area and that one of Bigger's painting, "Starry Clown" was selected for the portfolio. NTIEVA, with the Marcus Grant, produced 500 portfolios and each was placed at no cost in the elementary and secondary schools in the consortium of the Institute. McCarter and Davis write that the portfolio has been successful with teachers and students, that they received requests for additional portfolios, and are reaching out to Biggers to request the use of the image in commercial production of future portfolios.

Woolery writes that the Dallas Public Schools will be unable to continue their participation with NTIEVA, due to budgeting and time constraints. Woolery finishes the letter by saying the fine arts staff have been positive about the impact the program has had on their schools, and hopes Davis and McCarter will continue to let them know of opportunities in the future regarding NTIEVA and the Getty Foundation. Included at the end of the letter is a stipend worksheet for the faculty involved with NTIEVA based on current salaries.

Photocopy of a letter from Nancy Cason, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Nicole Holland, InterCultura, in regards to their meeting and about the upcoming "Wanderers" exhibition and how NTIEVA might assist Institute K-1 teachers and art specialists in preparing their students for it. Cason writes that they will mention the exhibition in the October NTIEVA newsletter, outlining ideas for connections with K-1 social studies and larger global theme of world peace. Cason will keep in touch with updates about the newsletter.

In regards to Pat Edwards, a program officer at the Charles Steward Mott Foundation, requesting names and information on outstanding community school. Abel has faxed the directors a list of the "characteristics" of what an outstanding community school is and the recommendation form. Abel writes that all nominations be sent directly to Edwards. However, the Getty Center does not endorse products, but Duke has sent a list of regional institute directors who specialize in discipline-based art education and might be interested in Hopper's unit. Enclosed with the letter, is the proposal from Hopper to Duke with the thematic unit on Native American Sioux Culture.

The letter from Davis is in regards to a proposal which the Statewide Working Group for Arts Education made to the Tremaine Foundation for funds to assist in assuring the Arts are included in the Goals 2000 education-reform planning process in Texas.

McCarter has gone over a report that Jones has written up, the Wilson Report, and is sending back some observations and clarifications that need to be included into the report.
