Radiation effects and metalloproteins studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study the bonding structure at the iron site of cytochrome c and the bonding of rare earth ions to the phosphate oxygens of ATP. Radiation effects are studied on several amino acid and simple peptide model systems. The emission spectrum of the x-ray source is calculated from literature references. The distributions of photon energy as a function of photon frequency and as a function of take-off angle are obtained. From these distributions, the radiation dose absorbed by an organic sample is found to be 10/sup 6/ rads/sec. The C 1s and N 1s spectra of amino acids and peptides are studied to characterize an internal reference standard for protein XPS spectra. Samples of native cytochrome c prepared from solutions of pH 1.5, 3, 7, and 11 are studied. Control samples include porphyrin cytochrome c (PCC), the metal free analogue of the native protein, and microperoxidase (MP), a mixture of heme peptides derived from the peptic digestion of cytochrome c. These samples show two S 2p peaks. The first peak has a binding energy (BE) of 163 eV, which corresponds to the S containing amino acids; the second peak is shifted to 167 eV. …

Motion of a Loosely Fitting Piston in a Closed End Cylinder Containing a Perfect Gas
The equations of motion are derived for a piston in a closed end cylinder containing a compressible perfect gas. These equations include the possibility of an arbitrary motion imposed on the cylinder. In the analysis, it is assumed that there is a clearance between the piston and the cylinder which is sufficiently small so that the flow in the gap is controlled by viscous forces.

Multigroup formalism for evaluation of continuous slowing down theory parameters
Continuous slowing down theory calculations have been found to yield significant discrepancies in the presence of strong absorption. An algorithm has been formulated for evaluating continuous slowing down theory parameters which should be applicable for cases with strong absorption. Excellent agreement with more precise calculations is obtained when the new parameters are used.

Preliminary evaluation of two-element optical concentrators for use in solar photovoltaic systems
The objective of this program was: to evaluate for photovoltaic applications the use of the compound parabolic concentrator design as a field collector--in conjunction with a primary focusing concentrator. The primary focusing concentrator may be a parabolic reflector, an array of Fresnel mirrors, a Fresnel lens, or some other type; Select several candidate configurations of such compound systems (focusing concentrators/CPC field collectors); Perform an analytic evaluation of the technical performance of these systems; and identify the most promising configurations and perform a cost effectiveness study pertinent to coupling CPC concentrators to solar cells. Thermal properties. Period covered: October--December 1975
The thermal decomposition investigation of PETN using an LX-13 type PETN was begun this quarter. Samples are being conditioned at 373, 353 and 333/sup 0/K and others will be conditioned at 393 and 383/sup 0/K. Data from five samples are reported. A series of chemical reactivity tests was made using PETN to determine if decomposition rates could be calculated from the results. The data fit a semilogarithmic plot of the gas evolved as a function of time reasonably well. The last of a series of HNAB and PETN samples was evaluated to determine if the two are compatible. These samples were conditioned at 80/sup 0/C for 26 and 25 months and showed no indication of reactivity. The investigation into methods of improving the chemical reactivity test data has continued and a source of a small variation in the instrument sensitivity was determined.
