"This analysis deals with the indirect regulator, wherefrom the behavior of the direct regulator is deduced as a limiting case. The prime mover is looked upon as "independent of the load": a change in the adjusting power (to be applied) for the control link (as, for example, in relation to the adjusting path (eta) with pressure valves or the rudder of vessels) does not modify the actions of the prime mover. Mass forces and friction are discounted; "clearance" also is discounted in the transmission links of the regulator" (p. 1).

"Results of measurements are given as a supplement to earlier tests for a laminar profile with nose flap; magnitude, form, and angle of attack of the flap were systematically changed. The experiments were carried out at an effective Reynolds number of 8.2 x 10(exp 5). A comparison with measurements on other profiles shows that the effect of a nose flap is essentially dependent upon magnitude of the nose radius coefficient of the profile" (p. 1).

"Maintenance of a laminar boundary layer by suction was suggested recently to decrease the friction drag of an immersed body, in particular an airfoil section. The present treatise makes a theoretical contribution to this question in which, for several cases of suction and blowing, the stability of the laminar velocity profile is investigated. Estimates of the minimum suction quantities for maintaining the laminar boundary layer and estimates of drag reduction are thereby obtained" (p. 1).

Tests of Lead-Bronze Bearings in the DVL Bearing-Testing Machine

"The lead-bronze bearings tested in the DVL machine have proven themselves very sensitive to load changes as in comparison with bearings of light metal. In order to prevent surface injuries and consequently running interruptions, the increase of the load has to be made in small steps with sufficient run-in time between steps. The absence of lead in the running surface, impurities in the alloy (especially iron) and surface irregularities (pores) decreases the load-carrying capacity of the bearing to two or three times that of the static load" (p. 1).

On the Theory of Unsteady Planing and the Motion of a Wing With Vortex Separation

The disturbance imparted to water by a planing body give rise to a wave form of motion on the free surface, the length of the waves increasing indefinitely with increase in the Froude number and being directly proportional to the latter in the case of the plane or two-dimensional problem. At large Froude numbers the effect of the weight shows up to any appreciable extent only at some distance from the body, so that the flow near the body can be considered as part of a flow of an infinitely extending weightless fluid. This paper is a consideration of these characteristics as well as a formulation of the planing problem and its relation to the problem of a thin wing.

The Lead Susceptibility of Fuels and Its Dependence on the Chemical Composition

The fact that by the use of tetraethyl lead a number of otherwise unsuitable fuels could be made to meet engine requirements was not sufficiently appreciated. While use of tetraethyl lead is limited, the addition of special leaded fuels that increase the octane number is a requirement for many fuels. In this connection, the extent to which the action of tetraethyl lead through the addition of knock-resistant hydrocarbons to the base gasoline is influenced, is quite important. To the elucidation of this problem and of the storage stability of leaded fuels, the present report is dedicated.

In the solution of a number of problems on the stability and controllability of airplanes, there arises the necessity for knowing the characteristics of the tail surfaces of the types in common use today. Of those characteristics, the most important are the effectiveness and hinge moments of the tail surfaces. As has been shown in the present paper, there exists the possibility of determining these characteristics by the formulas obtained with a degree of accuracy sufficient for the purposes of preliminary computation.

The Torsion of Box Beams With One Side Lacking

"The torsion of box beams of rectangular section, the edges of which are strengthened by flanges, and of which one side is lacking, is analyzed by the energy method. The torsional stresses are generally taken up by the bending of the two parallel walls, the rigidity of which is augmented by the third wall. The result was checked experimentally on duralumin and plywood boxes. The torsion recorded was 10 to 30 percent less than that given by the calculation, owing to self-stiffening" (p. 1).

Finally, the operation of some typical shock-absorbing systems are examined and the necessity brought out for taking into account, in dynamic landing-gear tests, the effect of the wing lift at the instant of contact with the ground" (p. 1).

Stresses in Single-Spar Wing Constructions With Incompletely Built-Up Ribs

It is shown that the force distribution resulting from incomplete ribs in single spar wing structures may be determined with the aid of the shear field method by a statistically indeterminate computation. A numerical computation is given of the force distribution of a wing structure whose two neighboring incomplete ribs with web missing in half the section are torsionally loaded.

This paper presents a discussion of three potential sources of error in recording engine knocking which are: the natural oscillation of the membrane, the shock process between test contacts, and the danger of burned contacts. Following this discussion, the paper calls attention to various results which make the bouncing-pin indicator appear fundamentally unsuitable for recording knock phenomena.

"The method of recording the direction of flows on the basis of the hydrodynamic zero-point measurement has now reached a certain limit, in spite of the good results achieved. While the available flow-direction devices are accurate enough for many purposes, they are all insufficient for perfectly exact prediction of the flow direction. The next problem will be to achieve a point-by point flow-direction record, whereby the test procedure must be simplified, accelerated, and the degree of accuracy of the test data improved" (p. 1).

On the Calculation of Flow Past an Infinite Screen of Thin Airfoils

This report deals with the flow past an infinite screen of thin airfoil (two-dimensional problem). The vortex distribution across the profile is established with appropriate expansion in series and the velocity distribution lift, moment, and profile shape deduced. Inversely, the distribution is deduced from the vorticity. The method is the extension of the Birnbaum-Glauert method for the isolated wing.

"The present report deals with the development of a thermometer for recording stagnation temperature in compressible mediums in turbulent flow within 1 to 2 percent error of the adiabatic temperature in the stagnation point, depending upon the speed. This was achieved by placing the junction of a thermocouple near the stagnation point of an aerodynamically beneficial body, special care being taken to assure an uninterrupted supply of fresh compressed air on the junction together with the use of metals of low thermal conductivity, thus keeping heat-transfer and heat-dissipation losses to a minimum. In other experiments the use of the plate thermometer was proved unsuitable for practical measurements by reason of its profound influence in the reading by the Reynolds number and by the direction of flow" (p. 1).

This report deals with a reciprocal comparison of an automatic pressure control, an automatic rpm control, an automatic temperature control, and an automatic directional control. It shows the difference between the "faultproof" regulator and the actual regulator which is subject to faults, and develops this difference as far as possible in a parallel manner with regard to the control systems under consideration. Such as analysis affords, particularly in its extension to the faults of the actual regulator, a deep insight into the mechanism of the regulator process.

"A check of the calculation methods used by Foppl and Henky for investigating the reliability of shell plating under hydrostatic pressure has proved that the formulas yield practical results within the elastic range of the material. Foppl's approximate calculation leaves one on the safe side. It further was found on the basis of the marked ductility of the shell plating under tensile stress that the strength is from 50 to 100 percent higher in the elastic range than expected by either method" (p. 1).

Materials for Slack Diaphragms

This report deals with systematic experiments carried out on five diaphragm materials with different pretreatment, for the purpose of ascertaining the suitability of such materials for slack diaphragms. The relationship of deflection and load, temperature and moisture, was recorded. Of the explored materials, synthetic leather, balloon cloth, goldbeaters skin, Igelit and Buna, synthetic leather treated with castor oil is the most suitable material for the small pressure range required.

The chordwise distribution theory was taken over from the theory of the infinite wing. Since in this work a series expansion in b/t was used, the computation converges only for large aspect ratios. The theory of plasticity in the case of simple loading accompanied by strain-hardening

The author has previously shown that a deformation theory of plasticity is entirely adequate when the loading is simple; that is, when all the applied forces grow in proportion to a single parameter. The author now shows how a general plasticitytheory for any complex loading may be constructed by successively adding quantities of the nature of correction terms to the deformation theory. All of the theories of plasticity so far suggested for the complex loading condition are shown to be special cases of this general theory.

"The coefficient of friction between piston ring and cylinder liner was measured in relation to gliding acceleration, pressure, temperature, quantity of oil and quality of oil. Comparing former lubrication-technical tests, conclusions were drawn as to the state of friction. The coefficients of friction as figured out according to the hydrodynamic theory were compared with those measured by tests" (p. 1).
