The Ductility of Brazed Stainless Steel Joints (open access)

The Ductility of Brazed Stainless Steel Joints

Abstract: "The ductility of Type 310 stainless steel T-joints brazed with GE-62 brazing alloy was measured at room temperatures 1200, 1650, and 1800 F. The measure of ductility was taken as the plastic axial strain required to crack braze fillets in T-section tensile specimens. At elevated temperatures, the ductility of as-brazed joints approximated that of the stainless steel, but at room temperature the brazed joints had only one-tenth the ductility of the base metal. Annealing for 16 hr at 1800 F in air was found to triple the room-temperature ductility of the brazed joint."

Radiation Damage to Organic Ion-Exchange Materials (open access)

Radiation Damage to Organic Ion-Exchange Materials

From abstract: "The stability of polystyrene and phenolic ion-exchange resins to radiation from a Co60 source and from absorbed Ce144-PR144 was investigated. Sulfonated polystyrene cation-exchange resins lost 10 to 20% of their capacity per watt-hour of radiation absorbed per gram of oven-dry resin, while the quaternary amine anion-exchange polystyrene resins lost about 40%. Phenolic cation-exchange resins lost only 1%."

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Progress Report on Waste Processing Development Project: The Concentration of Waste

"The objective of the Waste Processing Development Project is to investigate the feasibility of concentrating high-level waste streams to their minimum volume and packaging such waste in containers that are primarily safe and transferable...This report describes experimental and pilot plant development work and enlarges upon two schemes: (1) the concentration of dilute waste solutions to 60 or 70 percent solids slurries in a batch slurry evaporator, removal of the residual water from the waste by evaporation, and fusion in the final waste container; (2) accomplishment of the complete concentration and fusion cycle in one piece of equipment on a continuous basis."

Free Convection in the SIR Mark A Rotating Plugs

This technical report is intended as a brief description of the free convection problem existing in the various annuli of the SIR Mark A rotating plugs. It is by no means a complete report of the plug "hot tests", but merely records some of the more significant experimental observations and presents a few of the theories and calculations made to explain the observed free convection phenomenon. The general discussion which follows is chronological. Details of analyses are relegated to the Appendix.

Observations on the Behavior of Hydrogen in Zirconium (open access)

Observations on the Behavior of Hydrogen in Zirconium

Abstract: "Some embrittling effects noted in Zr have been explained by the presence of hydrogen. This phenomenon was initially correlated with the existence of a second phase in the microstructure. The amount of this phase is reduced by vacuum annealing and shows a direct correlation with the hydrogen content of the specimen. X-ray and electron-diffraction evidence identifies the phase as ZrH. Observations are given on the solubilities, diffusion rates and equilibrium pressures of hydrogen in zirconium, and the application of these data to the removal of hydrogen."

Density and Refractive Index of Uranyl Fluoride Solutions (open access)

Density and Refractive Index of Uranyl Fluoride Solutions

"In the course of an ultracentrifugal investigation of uranyl fluoride solutions, their densities and refractive indices were measured as a function of concentration. The measurements were carried out near 25 and 30 C and if necessary extrapolated to 25.0 and 30.0 C from the observed temperature coefficients. Most density data were obtained pycnometrically (25 cc samples) and a few gradient tubes. The refractive index measurements were carried out with a Bausch and Lomb dipping refractometer (calibrated with "known" solutions) using sodium-D light. The materials used and the analytical procedures were described earlier. Although the accuracy of the density measurements was approximately one part in 10,000, the accuracy of the determinations at high UO2F2 concentration is considerably less, in view of the uncertainty in the uranium analyses."

The Determination of Adsorbed Moisture on Uranium and Uranium Oxide: A New Method for Moisture Determinations (open access)

The Determination of Adsorbed Moisture on Uranium and Uranium Oxide: A New Method for Moisture Determinations

Abstract: "A method is described for determining moisture on uranium and uranium oxides. This method should also be applicable to solid samples which, when heated, do not decompose to form water or liberate a substance which will react with Fischer's reagent. The method should be especially applicable to samples which are insoluble in alcohol or Karl Fischer reagent under normal titration conditions, or which will themselves react with the reagent. The amount of moisture on uranium and uranium oxide was found to be 0.02% except when the oxide was found to be 0.02% except when the oxide source was uranyl sulfate. In this case, the moisture content was found to be 0.1%. Modifications of the procedure and apparatus are presented for improving the accuracy and shortening the time necessary for the determination."
