From introduction: The purpose of this work was to determine the distribution and reserves of pitchblende in the veins. These particular mines were selected because the other mines that had produced pitchblende in the east were either inaccessible, or accessible under such adverse conditions as to make detailed mapping impracticable.

This is a progress report of the production reactors on the Hanford Reservation for the month of September 1950. This report takes each division (e.g., manufacturing, medical, accounting, occupational safety, security, reactor operations, etc.) of the site and summarizes its accomplishments and employee relations for that month.

Early this year recommendations for biological research with tritium were outlined by M. E. Getzendaner in document EW-17059. Since then work on many of the preliminary experiments suggested in that document has been and further thought has been given to design a research program to secure the information needed for evaluation of the tritium hazards. It seems desirable at this time to reformulate the projected research more extensively. This document will indicate only the scope of desirable investigations, without attempting to spell out in detail the experimental procedures to be followed. Proposed investigations are studies of water metabolism; studies of hydrogen metabolism; studies with tritium labelled compounds of biological interest; and studies of the biological effect of tritium radiations. The problems outlined under these headings were chosen on the basis of general scientific interest. In most if not all cases, however, the application to radiation hazard evaluation and control is obvious.

"A method for the preparation of mammalian ribonucleic acids employing high concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride in the fractionation procedure is reported in this paper. Aside from the facility of preparation the method has the advantage of avoiding conditions of acidity and alkalinity which might degrade tissue ribonucleic acids and, by virtue of the protein denaturant action of guanidine salts, of minimizing the possibility for enzymatic degradation" (p. 3).

Discussion of electronic paramagnetic resonance for the free radical a, a-diphenyl β-picryl hydrazyl as observed by its effect on the transmission of microwaves through a TE {sub 01} cavity with a small amount of the free radical placed approximately on the axis of the cavity; the half-width of this resonance at half maximum absorption was 1.45 oersteds.

A zirconium crystal bar, weighing 29 pounds and 1 5/16 inches in diameter by 8 feet in over-all length, was prepared, using pear-shaped zirconium couples to join the filament to the electrodes. This crystal bar was the largest produced to date in the 16-in.-diam. de Boer unit. The design of the couplings was modified to incorporate improvements indicated by the initial run, and another run is in progress. Binary alloys of Zr and Ni, Cr, and Si, as well as a zirconium alloy containing Fe, Al, and Si, were prepared for use as feed material in the small pyrex de Boer bulbs. The transfer of these elements from the feed to the crystal bar is being investigated. The rate of deposition and the type of crystal structure obtained with additions of various amounts of iodine are being studied. (auth)
