Corrosion of Type 347 Stainless Steel in the Uranium-Derby Pickle Bath
Abstract: In one of the final stages of the process at the Mallinckrodt Uranium Refining Center, a 45 per cent nitric acid solution at about 170 F is used to pickle the calcined magnesium fluoride scale off the uranium derbies. The increase in the fluoride-ion content of the bath tends to promote corrosion of the Type 347 stainless tanks. This attack becomes excessive if 0.3 g/liter of fluoride ion or more is present. It was found that if aluminum ion is added to the solution the corrosiveness of the bath can be controlled. Two or three times as much aluminum ion as fluoride ion present is found satisfactory at 170 F. Indications are that the tying up of the fluoride-ion by the complexion [AlF6]8 is responsible for the corrosion control.

Evaluation of Methods of Brazing Aluminum Spacing Fins to Flat-Plate Aluminum-Clad Fuel Elements
Abstract: "Four brazing methods and one other joining process were evaluated for the joining of aluminum spacer fins to flat-plate aluminum-clad fuel elements. None of these methods appear completely suitable for use in a mass-production operation. Furnace brazing and salt-bath brazing were most promising. However, the mechanical problems involved in the application of either process deter their recommendation. Resistance brazing and torch-brazing were proven impractical. The great difference in mass between the two pieces being joined prevents the use of either the resistance or torch method. Pressure bonding is not applicable because of the excessive deformation of parts being joined."

Grain Refinement of the As-Cast Uranium-5 w/o Chromium Alloy by Ternary Additions
Abstract: "Refinement of grain size of the base uranium-chromium eutectic alloy (uranium-5 w/o chromium) by ternary additions is discussed. Thirteen additions to the base alloy were investigated, and three additions were found to exhibit worthwhile grain-refinement tendencies. The three alloys, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w.o molybdenum, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o germanium, and uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o niobium, were heat treated to produce final grain-size structures of between 0.015 and 0.033 mm."

Plastic Flow During Extrusion of Tubing
Abstract: "A study of plastic flow during the extrusion of tubing was made by extruding colored Plasticine billets in a small-scale extrusion press. Decreasing the included angle of the conical die and tapering the ram end of the billet decreased the amount of coextrusion of the backer block into the tubing, lubricating the billet also decreased coextrusion."

Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming
From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

Preliminary Report on Uranium-Bearing Pliocene (?) Rocks in the Split Rock Area, Central Wyoming
From abstract: A sequence of slightly radioactive Pliocene(?) rocks in the Split Rock area of central Wyoming is at least 600 feet thick, underlies an area of more than 25 square miles, and consists of alternating beds of tuffaceous shale, sandstone, and pumicite. Only a small part of the section has been examined. In addition to the uranium content of the strata, there has been secondary concentration of uranium in brecciated limestone similar to spring deposits that could be of Pliocene or Pleistocene age.

Some Effects of Aileron Deflection on the Static Lateral and Directional Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Contemporary Airplane Models
Memorandum presenting some effects of aileron deflection on the static lateral and directional aerodynamic characteristics of four airplane models which are representative of aircraft capable of flight at supersonic speeds. The results are presented for subsonic Mach numbers ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 and for supersonic Mach numbers ranging from 1.20 to 1.90. They are limited to the most pertinent aerodynamic effects of ailerons contributing to the lateral and directional characteristics of each airplane type.

Disposal of irradiated waste Ink'' solution (Production Test 105-529-A)
Boron solution circulated through special poison tubes to achieve more variable control of neutron flattening'' was tested in the 100-DR Hanford reactor. About 2700 gallons of irradiated waste Ink solution from Production Test 105-529-A was discharged to an underground crib at 100-DR, after radiochemical analyses and evaluation of radiation protection aspects by the Radiological Sciences Department. In case the Ink method is considered for production use at Hanford in the future, further biological and biophysical study is recommended to determine whether irradiated waste Ink solution may be disposed of into the Columbia River, into the ground near the river, or into the ground several miles from the river. 10 refs, 2 tabs.

The Effect of Gaps on Pile Reactivity
From abstract: "The variation of the reactivity of a pile as a function of width of a transverse gap is obtained. The method involves first finding the boundary condition satisfied by the flux at the gap face. This, in principle, provides enough information for a complete solution of the pile equations. A method for calculating the reactivity change is presented. The calculated reactivity is compared with experiment and a brief discussion of the validity of the approximations is given."
