This operations manual describes the test software for the Dounreay Shuffler. The Shuffler is an assay system, controlled by a Commodore PET computer, that measures the plutonium content in leached hulls at the fuel reprocessing plant in Dounreay, Scotland. The Shuffler contains a /sup 252/Cf neutron source that is moved between storage and irradiation locations to obtain measurement data. A stepping motor control (SMC) module operates the Shuffler and accepts commands from the PET to move the source. This manual briefly describes the Shuffler and provides details on running and using the diagnostic software program. The communications protocol for message transmittal between the PET and SMC is defined and a detailed example of message sending is presented in an appendix.

The objective of the proposed work is to demonstrate the operational and economic feasibility of using high-temperature ceramic filters for particulate control in a variety of coal gasification power generating systems.

As the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE contractors have increased the magnitude and scope of their cooperative activities with other nations in the nuclear fuel cycle and waste management field, a need has developed for ready sources of information concerning foreign waste management programs, DOE technology exchange policies, bilateral fuel cycle and waste management agreements and plans and activities to implement those agreements. The INFX (International InLormation E~change) Guide is one of a series of documents that have been prepared to provide that information. The INFX Guide has been compiled under the charter of PNL's International Support Office (IPSO) to maintain for DOE a center to collect, organize, evaluate and disseminate information on foreign and international radioactive waste management programs. Because the information in this document is constantly subject to change, the document is assembled in loose-leaf form to accommodate frequent updates.

The task force has studied two options for an 8 T ring operating at 2 K. In the first of these the synchrotron light load is taken at 2 K, and in the second it is intercepted on a bore liner at 4.5 K. The possibility of staged construction of the 20 Tev, 8 T, 2 K ring with initial operation at 15 Tev, 6 T and 4.5 K has also been considered. A set of dimensions and specifications has been developed for each of the two 8 T options in the three categories: magnets, cryostat, and refrigeration system with the object of providing for a detailed cost comparison with the 6 T, design D ring. Cost information for refrigeration systems that are not strictly comparable to design D have been developed from component quotations. A very preliminary discussion of costs is included in the report. In 1985 January a Taskforce was organized to study the impact of magnet design on the commissioning and operation of the SSC. The results of the study, in the form of this report, are intended as one of several sources of input for the Magnet Type Selection Committee. Other major input will come from the Magnet Taskforce, the Test String Taskforce, the Cost Estimating Taskforce, and other study groups. All of these efforts will culminate in a magnet type selection, after which concentrated R&D on the selected magnet can commence. The study began with a one-week workshop, held on the UC Berkeley campus in 1985 January 14--18. An interim report of the Taskforce, based on the results of the Workshop, was published on 1985 January 28 (SSC-05). With very few exceptions, the work of the Taskforce was carried out by the participants in the Workshop, both during the workshop and in the subsequent weeks. This report is the collective effort of that group, whose very substantial contribution of time, effort, and thought is gratefully acknowledged.

The Magnetic Measurements Engineering Group at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) has designed and built, and is currently using, a Magnetic-moment Measurement and Sorting System (MMSS). The MMSS measures magnetic moments of permanent-magnet material and sorts the material according to selected criteria. The MMSS represents the latest application of the LBL General Purpose Magnetic Measurement Data Acquisition System reported on a MT-8. We describe the theoretical basis for the MMSS, the analog and digital components, and a unique method of calibrating tne MMSS using only measured electrical quantities. We also discuss the measurement and sorting of permanent-magnet material to be incorporated in beam-line elements (dipoles and quadrupoles) in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Advanced Test Accelerator Beam Director.

X-ray beams emerging from the new SLAC electron-positron storage ring (PEP) can impinge on the walls of tangential divertor channels. A fixed mask made of OFHC copper is installed in the channel to limit wall heating. The mask is cooled with water flowing axially at 30/sup 0/C. Beam strikes on the mask cause highly localized heating in the channel structure. Analyses were completed to determine the temperatures and thermally-induced stresses due to this heating. The current design and operating conditions should result in the entrance to the fixed mask operating at a peak temperature of 105/sup 0/C with a peak thermal stress at 26% of yield.
