Improving the Accuracy of Computed Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors
This paper describes a computational method for improving the accuracy of a given eigenvalue and its associated eigenvector. The method is analogous to iterative improvement for the solution of linear systems. An iterative algorithm using working precision arithmetic is applied to increase the accuracy of the eigenpair. The only extended precision computation is the residual calculation. The method is related to inverse iteration and to Newton's method applied to the eigenvalue problem.

First Annual Workshop on Ice Storage for Cooling Applications : Argonne National Laboratory, June 4-5, 1981
The papers presented at the first annual workshop on ice storage for cooling applications by participants from the U.S. and Canada are summarized. Novel methods of preparing naturally frozen ice and storing it are described. Attention is given to technical and economic problems and related design considerations. Comparison is made with conventional air conditioning methods. Both industrial and residential applications are discussed with regard to cost.

Polishing Methods for Metallic and Ceramic Transmission Electron Microscopy Specimens
"In recent years, the increasing sophistication of transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies of materials has necessitated more exacting methods of specimen preparation. The present report describes improved equipment and techniques for electropolishing and chemically polishing a wide variety of specimens. Many of the specimens used in developing or improving the techniques to be described were irradiated with heavy ions such as nickel or vanadium to study radiation damage. The high cost of these specimens increased the need for reproducible methods of initial preparation, postirradiaton processing, and final thinning for TEM examination. A technique was also developed to salvage specimens that had previously been thinned but were unusable for various reasons. Jet polishing is, in general, the method of choice for surface polishing, sectioning, and thinning. The older beaker electropolishing method is included in this report because it is inexpensive and simple, and gives some insight into how the more recent methods were developed. 29 figures, 8 tables. An Equation of State for Fluid Ethylene
Abstract: A thermodynamic property formulation for ethylene, developed as a part of a joint industry-government project, is presented. The formulation includes an equation of state, vapor pressure equation, and equation for the ideal gas heat capacity. The coefficients were determined by a least squares fit of selected experimental data. Comparisons of property values calculated using the equation of state with measured values are given. The equation of state is not valid in the critical region (pc + 0.3 pc for temperatures of Tc + 0.05 Tc). Errors on the order of 20 percent for derived properties and 10 percent for density may be encountered near the critical point. Tables of the thermodynamic properties of ethylene for the liquid and vapor phases for temperatures from the freezing line to 450 K with pressures to 40 MPa are presented. The equation of state and its derivative and integral functions for calculating thermodynamic properties are included. Estimates of the accuracy of calculated properties are given. A guide for use of computer programs for the calculation of thermodynamic properties of ethylene with listings of subprograms and a sample program to illustrate the use and results of the program are included.

Criteria for the Installation of Energy Conservation Measures
From abstract: Standard installation practices were developed to assist in assuring the effectiveness and safety of energy conservation measures installed under the Residential Conservation Service (RCS). They serve as mandatory standards under RCS but are recommended guides for all installations of the covered materials and products. The criteria are being used by DoE to develop training manuals for installers, inspectors, and energy auditors.
