Nonlinear excitation of convective cells by mode coupling of drift waves (open access)

Nonlinear excitation of convective cells by mode coupling of drift waves

It is shown that the nonlinear interaction of drift waves resonantly excites the convective cells at the wavelengths comparable to the ion gyroradius (k/sub perpendicular to rho/sub i/ approximately 1) where the drift waves are highly dispersive and the growth rates are the maximum. The results of numerical simulations are consistent with theoretical predictions. The effect of magnetic shear is also considered.

Western Energy Resources and the Environment: Geothermal Energy

This document on geothermal energy is the first in a series of summary reports prepared by the Office of Energy, Minerals and Industry of the Environmental Protection Agency. The series describes what environmental effects are known or expected from new energy resource development in the western third of the United States. The series indicates some of the research and development activities under way and reviews the non-environmental constraints to resource development. It also serves as a reference for planners and policymakers on the entire range of problems and prospects associated with the development of new energy resources. [DJE-2005]

Bauschinger effects and work-hardening in spheroidized steels (open access)

Bauschinger effects and work-hardening in spheroidized steels

The effects of cementite particles and subgrain boundaries on work-hardening behavior of spheroidized carbon steels were investigated by making direct measurements of residual internal stresses. These internal stresses developed due to plastic incompatibilities between elastic particles and an elastic-plastic matrix. A continuum analysis of these internal stress fields, based upon a multiple slip model, is presented and is found to be in good accord with the experiments. The internal stresses appear to saturate in the plastic strain range of 3 approx. 5% where a transition in strain-hardening behavior was observed ("double-n" behavior), and to contribute approximately 20% to total work-hardening. The cementite-particle-pinned-subgrain-boundaries, formed during a post-quench annealing treatment, were found to lower the internal stress, thus indicating that they assisted the relaxation processes of entrapped Orowan loops by acting as sources of dislocations. The flow stress increment in dispersion hardened alloys due to work-hardening consisted of internal stress, forest stress, and source-shortening stress. The flow stress curves of spheroidized carbon steels were found to be described by a modified mean-square-root addition law of the form: sigma/sub f/ = sigma/sub epsilon/sub p/=0/ = sigma/sup i/ ((..delta..sigma/sup s/)/sup 2/ + (..delta..sigma/sup ss/)/sup 2/ + (sigma/sup f/)/sup 2/)/sup 1///sup 2/.The maximum normal interfacial …

Perturbation Theory With Instantons. [Gluon Propagator, Proper Vertex Function] (open access)

Perturbation Theory With Instantons. [Gluon Propagator, Proper Vertex Function]

''Perturbation theory'' rules are developed for calculating the effect of instantons in a pure Yang-Mills theory with no fermions, in the ''dilute gas'' approximation in which the N-instanton solution is assumed to be the sum of N widely separated one-instanton solutions. These rules are then used to compute the gluon propagator and proper vertex function including all orders of the instanton interaction but only to lowest order in the gluon coupling. It is to be expected that such an approximation is valid only for momenta q larger than the physical mass ..mu... The result is that in this regime instantons cause variations in the propagator and vertex of the form (..mu../sup 2//q/sup 2/)/sup -8..pi../sup 2/b/ where b is the coefficient in the expansion of the ..beta.. function: ..beta.. = bg/sup 3/+... .

Design and evaluation of a two-phase turbine for low quality steam--water mixtures (open access)

Design and evaluation of a two-phase turbine for low quality steam--water mixtures

A new two-phase turbine was designed and built for testing in the laboratory, using a low quality steam-water mixture as a working fluid. The measured performance compares well with performance predictions of a numerical model of the expander. Details of the selection of the type of expander are given. The design of an experimental expander for use in a clean two-phase flow laboratory experiment and the development of a numerical model for performance analysis and extrapolations are described. Experiments including static cascade performance with two-phase fluid, disk friction and windage measurements, and two-phase performance measurements of the experimental expander are reported. Comparisons of the numerical model and experimental results, and the prediction of the performance of an advanced design, indicating how performance improvements can be achieved, are also included. An engine efficiency of 23 percent for a single-nozzle test was measured. Full admission performance, based upon the numerical model and achievable nozzle thrust coefficients indicate that an engine efficiency of between 38 and 48 percent can be realized with present technology. If maximum liquid removal loss is assumed, this performance range is predicted to be 38 to 41 percent. Droplet size reduction and the development and implementation of enhanced two-phase …

Performance of a total-flow impulse turbine for geothermal applications (open access)

Performance of a total-flow impulse turbine for geothermal applications

A new, axial-flow impulse turbine was tested at LLL as part of the geothermal energy development program. Engine efficiency of this single-stage, two-phase expander was measured at 23% during a single-nozzle test. Performance predictions of a numerical model agreed with these results. Full-admission performance (based on the numerical-model and attainable nozzle thrust coefficients) indicates that engine efficiency can reach between 38 and 40% with present technology. Improved techniques for analyzing two-phase flow and further reduction of droplet sizes should provide 70% engine efficiency.

Helium generation in fusion reactor materials. Technical progress report, October 1976--March 1977 (open access)

Helium generation in fusion reactor materials. Technical progress report, October 1976--March 1977

The immediate objectives of this program are to measure the spectrum-integrated helium generation rates and cross sections of several materials in the available high intensity neutron sources, and to develop neutron dosimetry procedures using some of these materials. This requires further development of foil activation dosimetry techniques, since the cross section measurements require a detailed characterization of each neutron environment. The neutron facilities presently used in this program include accelerators producing d-T and d-Be reactions and high flux mixed-spectrum fission reactors. Most of the work reported here has focused on neutron spectra from the d-T reaction. A description is given of the preliminary analysis of wire rings included in the irradiation capsule for helium accumulation fluence dosimetry. The results show non-uniformities in the neutron fluence distribution characterizing this irradiation, and point out the value of helium accumulation fluence dosimetry for characterizing high energy (approximately 5 to 30 MeV) neutron fields. The helium accumulation fluence data are being used to adjust the neutron fluence map for calculation of final helium generation cross sections from the other RTNS-irradiated pure element specimens. Most of the specimens irradiated in the RTNS-I experiment have been analyzed for helium, and preliminary results are presented.
