Interim Geological Investigations in the U12b.08 Tunnel, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada

From introduction: The geologic studies in the U12b.08 tunnel were conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission for the purpose of determining the pre-explosion chemical and physical properties of the tuffs exposed in the tunnel. These data will be used in evaluating the geologic effects of the explosion by comparison with similar post-shot geologic data.

Reactivity and efficiency trends vs operating trends for B, D, DR, and F reactors, 1956--1960 (open access)

Reactivity and efficiency trends vs operating trends for B, D, DR, and F reactors, 1956--1960

Changes in operation and corresponding changes in the reactivity status of Hanford reactors are the result of a continuing effort to improve operating efficiency. Trends data related to these changes in operation and reactivity have been published previously for the periods from 1955 through 1959. The purpose of this report is to include trends data for 1960. Bar graphs in the first part of the report show yearly averages of selected data, and the line graphs in the second part show the interrelationship of some of the yearly averages depicted in the first part. The tables in Appendix I show maximum, average, and minimum values. This document presents trends data for B, D, DR, and F reactors, while a second document, HW-72856, presents trends data for C, H, KE, and KW reactors.

Relocation of radial enrichment at the K reactors to decrease enrichment inventory (open access)

Relocation of radial enrichment at the K reactors to decrease enrichment inventory

The enrichment inventory required in the Hanford reactors is greatly dependent on the location of the radial enrichment ring. Present and past philosophy has dictated that the radial enrichment be located as close to the periphery of the reactors as possible, consistent with total control criteria, to obtain maximum flattening efficiency. As long as individual tube power limits dictate total pile power this philosophy of maximum flattening is consistent with a goal of maximum production. For the past year the total pile power at the K reactors has been restricted by bulk outlet water temperature limit or administrative total power level limits. During this time fuel ruptures have been negligible due to improved metal quality and axial flux shaping. If present operating conditions continue the relocation of the enrichment ring could be desirable to decrease the enrichment inventory. Moving the radial enrichment toward the center of the reactor to decrease the inventory would result in lower flattening efficiency and require higher tube power limits for the same total pile power level.

Instrumentation studies, Status report (open access)

Instrumentation studies, Status report

Two computer codes (1- and 6-node models) were used in the calculations. For the 1-node model, standard reactor kinetics, heat transfer, and instrument delay equations were programmed for analog and digital computers; effects of full-pile reactivity insertions were calculated. The 6-node model contains the time-dependent diffusion equations and heat transfer and instrument delay equations; it was programmed for the analog computer only, and was used to calculate effects of local reactivity insertions. Three types of protection had to be provided: period, rate, and level. The reactors covered include B, D, DR, F, C, H, and K. Results indicate that if the rod system withdrawal speed was reduced, the Zone Temperature Monitor would meet the established criteria over an adequate high level range, whereas the ability of a percentage trip instrument to meet the criteria would be unduly dependent on procedure. The conclusions relative to the older reactors should apply qualitatively to K reactor high-level protection.

Production reactor process tube, dummy, and fuel element cladding film and radioactivity studies (open access)

Production reactor process tube, dummy, and fuel element cladding film and radioactivity studies

During the normal operation of reactors ionic, particulate and colloidal substances in the coolant are activated as they pass through the neutron flux. The parent substances for the activated materials come from several sources: transient corrosion products from the coolant system piping and fuel element cladding, coolant additives and coolant impurities. Previous studies have shown that a major portion of these substances do not simply pass through the neutron flux field but undergo complex sorption phenomena that result in effluent radio-nuclide levels considerably in excess of what would be expected from activation on a once-through basis. This report is being written to outline studies that will provide activity inventory data that will aid in defining radionuclide retention reactions in reactor coolant systems.
