Reduced reflectance and altered color: The potential cost of external particulate matter accumulation on urban Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers (open access)

Reduced reflectance and altered color: The potential cost of external particulate matter accumulation on urban Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers

Authors of the article state that airborne particulate matter (PM) can accumulate on feather surfaces and alter feather appearance, so they quantified PM accumulation on Rock Pigeon feathers and analyzed the spectral properties of extracted particulates. Their findings suggest that wild birds could incur an urban pollution penalty as PM accumulation has the potential to alter feather properties.

Evolutionary models of lateralization: Steps toward stigmergy? (open access)

Evolutionary models of lateralization: Steps toward stigmergy?

Article discusses an interesting approach to accounting for brain and behavioral asymmetry based on competition and cooperation in phenotypically asymmetric individuals. The model in question shows, in an almost fully analytical way, that under proper conditions, there exists an unequal number of equilibrium of left-and right-lateralized individuals.

A Low-Power Wireless System for Predicting Early Signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Incorporating an Optimized CNN Model Implemented on NVIDIA Jetson (open access)

A Low-Power Wireless System for Predicting Early Signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Incorporating an Optimized CNN Model Implemented on NVIDIA Jetson

Article discusses the low survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest and its long-term risks that patients may experience. Authors propose a more effective method of recording and reporting sudden cardiac arrest symptoms so preventative measures may be instated earlier on to increase survival rate.

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age) (open access)

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age)

Authors of the article sought to examine the effectiveness of an acute prolonged exercise session on post-exercise executive function in physically active adults and to assess if age or pre-exercise cognitive performance was predictive of the magnitude of change in executive task performance. Their results support the effectiveness of a single prolonged exercise bout to augment executive function in physically active adults, irrespective of age.

These Tunes Ain't Straight In Line: Grateful Dead Shows and Problems with Music Cataloging Outside of the Western Art Paradigm

Presentation provides an overview of the structure upon which modern library resource description is based, and we will highlight the difficulties of imposing this description standard on music for which it was not optimized, using examples from the Grateful Dead repertoire. It was presented at the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association's 44th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Prevalence and factors associated with diagnosed diabetes mellitus among Asian Indian adults in the United States (open access)

Prevalence and factors associated with diagnosed diabetes mellitus among Asian Indian adults in the United States

Article describes how a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) has been documented among South Asians living in the United States. However, combining the south Asian subgroups into one category makes the heterogeneity in the diagnosed DM, after controlling for known protective and risk factors. The authors assessed the association of Asian Indian ethnicity to diagnosed DM using a nationally representative sample of 1,986 Asian Indian adults in the US compared to 109,072 Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) using disaggregated data from the National health Interview Survey (2012-2016).

Molten Salt Corrosion Behavior of Dual-Phase High Entropy Alloy for Concentrating Solar Power Systems (open access)

Molten Salt Corrosion Behavior of Dual-Phase High Entropy Alloy for Concentrating Solar Power Systems

Article describes how dual-phase high entropy alloys have recently attracted widespread attention as advanced structural materials due to their unique microstructure, excellent mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. The molten salt corrosion behavior of AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy was evaluated in molten NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt at 450° C and 650° C in comparison to conventional duplex stainless steel 2205.
