Zirconium Metal Fines Recovery: Interim Technical Report for May 15, 1950 to December 15, 1950

This report covers the laboratory and pilot plant investigation of the reclamation of the low hafnium zirconium fines resulting from the manufacture of zirconium sponge and zirconium crystal bar. The process investigated involved recovery of the zirconium as zirconium tetrachloride, by drying the fines in an atmosphere of nitrogen and subsequent chlorination of the fines with anhydrous hydrogen chloride at temperatures above the sublimation point of the product.

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements (open access)

Recent Total Neutron Yield Measurements

The report summarizes results obtained since September, 1951, by total neutron yield experiments using 190 Mev deuterons and the MnSo4 tank method (UCRL-1375 and UCRL-1480). A new method of beam monitoring has resulted in establishing firmly the absolute yield for solid uranium and thorium primary targets backed by a solid uranium secondary. The beam monitoring was done by using a primary target built into a faraday cup. This method circumvents errors caused by recombination in the ionization chambers used previously.

Creep-Rupture Tests of Beryllium (open access)

Creep-Rupture Tests of Beryllium

"A program of creep-rupture tests of several bars of Beryllium has been completed. The tests were made at 1200, 1400, 1550, and 1700 F. in protective atmospheres of tank helium or hydrogen. The results are given in a summary table and by creep and design curves. A description of the test set-up is included."

A Study of Equilibrium Phases in the System UOâ‚‚ - ZrOâ‚‚

Report discussing phase equilibrium studies on the UOâ‚‚ - ZrOâ‚‚ system, which was found to primarily consist of two solid solutions separated by a two phase region which shrinks as temperature rises. These studies were completed to understand UOâ‚‚ and ZrOâ‚‚ high temperature reactions and temperature limitations.

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron (open access)

Analysis of Lid Tank Neutron Data for Lead and Iron

Abstract: An analysis of the lid tank neutron data for Pb-H2O and Fe-H2O is made. "Effective" fast neutron cross sections for the metals are obtained. This is based on the "one collision theory" of shielding. Values are 3.4 barns for Pb and 2.0 barns for Fe. These compare very well with those obtained by Albert and Welton based on other lid tank data and another method of calculation.

Theoretical Calculations on ZPR Experimentation: Part 2. The Calibration of the Single Central Cross Control Rod

From Abstract: "The report is concerned with a theoretical analysis of the experiment known as the Calibration of the 3" Cross Control Rod. The experiment provided 29 points on a curve of reactivity (in hours per centimeter) versus depth of control rod insertion. An attempt to reproduce this curve theoretically has been quite successful."

A Volumetric Method for the Determination of Lithium (open access)

A Volumetric Method for the Determination of Lithium

From introduction: "It has become desirable to develop an alternative method for the determination of lithium to serve as a stand-by method at times when the flame photometer is inoperative, or to supplement the latter in cases where a doubtful analysis requires further investigation. A method based upon the precipitation of lithium with potassium ferriperiodate was investigated because of its expected freedom from interference by aluminum."

The Chelate Process, IV. Process Flow Involving o-Dichlorobenzene as the Solvent for TTA

Comparative studies of a series of halogenated solvents, as carriers for TTA in the chelate process for plutonium extraction, indicate that ortho-dichlorobenzene most nearly satisfies the requirements that are set forth. A complete process design is presented for use with this solvent, and flow data and equipment capacities are given for dissolver solution and for uranium-free fission product solution as alternate feeds to the process.
