Geological and Geophysical Survey of Fluorspar Areas in Hardin County, Illinois (open access)

Geological and Geophysical Survey of Fluorspar Areas in Hardin County, Illinois

From abstract: Pt 1. The present work seems to confirm the genetic theory previously published, namely that [Illinois Cave in Rock] deposits were formed by ascending solutions. These solutions probably followed minor fissures that connected below with larger fissures, which in turn probably connected with a major fault zone. It is believed that where such minor fissures extended upward only to the shale or other impervious cap rock, or were greatly reduced in size where they penetrated such beds, the solutions spread laterally along the contact and along the limestone beds beneath it and replaced the limestone. Pt 2. This report is a presentation of the results of an electrical-resistivity survey conducted in the fluorspar-bearing areas of Hardin County, Ill., principally during the field seasons of 1934 and 1935.

Hydrologic Effects of Storing Liquified Sewage Sludge on Strip-Mined Land, Fulton County, Illinois

From introduction: In 1971, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a cooperative study to measure stream discharge, suspended-sediment load, and chemical quality of surface waters draining the project area. In 1976, the study was expanded to include measurement of ground-water levels and quality. The general hydrologic system in the vicinity has been described by Patterson, Fuentes, and Toler (1982).

Hydrologic Characteristics of Surface-Mined Land Reclaimed by Sludge Irrigation, Fulton County, Illinois

From introduction: This report contains a general description of the hydrology of the project site, summaries of the data collected during 1971 to 1978, and discusses some of the factors affecting the hydrology of the site. This information and the water-level contour map (Fuentes and Patterson, 1979) will be helpful in designing an effective ground-water monitoring program and will provide baseline hydrologic information from which future changes can be detected.

Plan of Study for the Northern Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (open access)

Plan of Study for the Northern Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis

From abstract: Sedimentary rocks of Cambrian and Ordovician age form a major aquifer system in most of Wisconsin and Iowa, northern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southeastern Minnesota, and northern Missouri. Many metropolitan areas depend on the aquifer for all or part of their water supplies. Declines in potentiometric head have been large in the most heavily pumped areas, most notably Chicago, Milwaukee-Waukesha, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Des Moines.

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."

Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951

From Introduction and Summary: "Reports from operating companies showed that 25,715 men worked at coke ovens in 1951, about 6 percent more than were employed in 1950 and, except in 1943, the largest work force since 1930, when 28,139 men were employed. The work time for all employees was 70,190,493 man-hours. The returns indicated an average of 344 work days per man as compared with 341 days in the previous year. Accidents at the ovens resulted in the death of 10 and injury to 768 workers, both of these figures representing fewer injuries than in 1950."
