Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, she and her husband John Houston Lenard lived in Tomball, near Houston, before moving to Kerrville with their family. Nell raised four boys and a girl and was heavily involved in her their lives and activities.

He also outlines the summer plan of the USS Ohio (BB-12) to cruise to Japan. Nimitz describes a fire aboard ship in a storeroom next to a powder magazine. He mentions being glad to be away from the Academy and expresses a desire to have shore duty in Honolulu when his time comes. He also mentions going into drydock at Kowloon and seeing all the barnacles on the hull of the Ohio.
