Photograph of a bridge, over the Canadian River, is now 18 inches from the water, which is only about a foot deep but formerly 16 feet above the water level. Acc. To William Dolezal, supervisor of the eat Canadian Soil Conservation District, the water deep enough to dive into from the bridge 25 years earlier. Silt from upstream farms has clogged the channel. Photograph of roadside erosion control. Severe gullying of roadside channels has been halted by sloping and then soding the banks and slopes with Bermuda grass. Work completed las tpart of June 1940. Roadsides are now being utilized for terrace outlet channels. When work was started, the gullies on each side of the road were cutting back into the fields and damaging the fences. OK-6450-B.

Farming Equipment and Methods

Photograph of Clarence E. Bunch, Soil Conservation Service technician (left) and Harry Newer (right), Soil Conservation Supervisor examine some of the cured weeping lovegrass hay that is being baled from windrows on a 2 ½ acre field planted 14 ½ months ago. On June 15 it yielded 350 pounds of reclaimed seed valued at $3.50 to $4.00 per acre. Forty-five days after the grass was cut with a binder for seed it yielded 10 [number unclear], sixty-five pound bales of hay. Total value of yield from planter to date is about $1200 or $600 per acre.** He [Mr. Newer?] planted lovegrass March 27, 1944 after his wife asked him to “sow that field [with] something that will keep the dust out of the house.” He plans to plant an additional 8 or 10 acres of lovegrass next year.
