Photograph of Severe gullying of roadside channels has been halted by sloping and sodding the banks and sodding the slopes to Bermuda grass. Work completed last part of June, 1940. Roadsides are now being utilized for terrace outlet channels. When work was started, the gullies on each side of the road were cutting back into the fields and damaging the fence. Yukon Camp.

Bunch, Soil Conservation Service technician (left) and Harry Newer (right), Soil Conservation Supervisor examine some of the cured weeping lovegrass hay that is being baled from windrows on a 2 ½ acre field planted 14 ½ months ago. On June 15 it yielded 350 pounds of reclaimed seed valued at $3.50 to $4.00 per acre. Forty-five days after the grass was cut with a binder for seed it yielded 10 [number unclear], sixty-five pound bales of hay. Total value of yield from planter to date is about $1200 or $600 per acre.** He [Mr. Newer?] planted lovegrass March 27, 1944 after his wife asked him to “sow that field [with] something that will keep the dust out of the house.” He plans to plant an additional 8 or 10 acres of lovegrass next year. Photograph of vegetated terrace outlet channel (principally Bermuda grass) established previous to sonstruction of terraces. This is a precautionary measure agaiinst erosion damage which might result from emptying excess terrace water into an unprotected or uncompleted outlet.

Photograph of gully control by fencing, sloping tree planting and protection from grazing in fall of 1937. Gully banks were sloped and trees planted. Trees have made some growth and other vegetation is becoming well established due to protection from grazing.
