Smith was a publisher and journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her editorials in support of the civil rights movement, a stance which resulted in her ostracism from local white society and her newspaper's eventual bankruptcy. Also, chapters should consider making donations to a number of funds, including a relief fund for victims of an earthquake in Oakland. Higgins suggests that because breast cancer rates are increasing in the general population chapters should plan a day for members to receive mammograms in lieu of a regular chapter meeting.

McCarroll sent this letter first class so that chapter presidents can announce the important information included therein at their February meetings. McCarroll is still recruiting members to serve on committees to help plan the upcoming area conference.
