Thalluim in Meteorites

Procedures for the separation and concentration of microgram to nanogram amounts of thallium from gram amounts to galena and meteorite metal, sulfide, and silicate phases were developed and are described. The thallium is extracted from aqueous bromide of chloride solutions of moderate acidity using diethyl ether. A device for elimination of the large volumes of solvent by dropwise evaporation is described. Organic matter in the residue is destroyed by treatment with aqua regia, and the thallium is the residue is converted to the nitrate for spectrochemical or mass-spectrometric examination. The presence of thallium in the residue is tested by Rhodamine B. test.

PBM, A Two-Group, Two-Region Reactor Model for Homogeneous, Highly Absorbing Systems and Machine Codes for Its Application

A nuclear model has been developed for homogeneous, two-region reactors possessing a relatively large percentage of epithermal absorption in both the core and blanket region. A number of new IBM 650 programs have been developed and existing programs modified to form a group of programs, compatible with the nuclear model and with each other, which can be used for preliminary evaluation of the effed of design variable on reactor characteristics.

Closed Extensions of the Laplace Operator Determined by a General Class of Boundary Conditions

This paper is concerned with the spectral theory of closed operators in Hilbert space determined by the Laplace operator and certain general boundary conditions. Using the method of J.W. Calkin, we treat the case of a bounded domain in E(m) with C(1,1) boundary, and, in addition, extend the method to cover the case for which the operator L in the boundary condition is not necessarily self-adjoint. It is shown that there exists an appropriate linear close of functions [formula] such that the operator in the Hilbert space [formula] and [formula] is self-adjoint. In potential theoretic terms it is the set of all sums p + h, where p is the potential due to a charge g in G and h is the potential due to a surface charge f on ∂G and h is a potential due to a surface charge f on G, where g and f are, respectively, square integrable over G and ∂G

Note on Estimating the Energies of the Arizona and Ungava Meteorite Craters

In the course of the cratering studies conducted as part of the Plowshare Program, the dependence of crater dimensions on depth of burst and the scaling laws relating crater dimensions to total energy release have been derived for chemical explosions in the desert alluvium of the Nevada Test Site. The desert alluvium is a lightly cemented sand and gravel, which was chosen for study because the first nuclear cratering explosions were fired in the medium and it was of interest to compare the nuclear and chemical explosion in the same medium. Shoemaker of the U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a detailed analysis of the Arizona Meteorite Crater and, through direct comparison with the nuclear explosion results in Nevada, arrived at an effective depth burst for the meteorite. He also reconstructed the original size and shape of the crater, and determined the limit of brecciation.

LRL-Nevada Drill Hole Survey Technique

The demands of the scientific programs of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the Nevada Test Site have necessitated the development of special drill hole survey techniques. These techniques, in general, have made possible the attainment of greater survey accuracies than are ordinarily obtained by the drilling industry in the course of normal survey work. For drill holes requiring a moderately high degree of location accuracy, standard survey equipment, manufactured by Eastman Oil Well Survey Company was adapted by LRL to meet this need. Where an extremely high degree of survey accuracy and control of drilling effort is necessary, such as in the drilling and survey of line-of-sight holes, special optical equipment was developed. The modifications of equipment, refinements in procedures, and special techniques necessary to adapt this equipment to meet the more demanding accuracy requirements of scientific programs are discussed. The overall techniques of survey, equipment used, and the accuracies obtained together with results of completed surveys showing a comparison with standard land survey methods are also discussed and illustrated in some detail.

Mobile Unit for Nondestructive Testing in the Field

The Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, University of California, uses a mobile nondestructive testing unit for radiographic testing of assemblies in the field. The unit is provided with an X-ray machine, portable cobalt-60 and cesium-137 energy sources, complete darkroom facilities, and equipment for detailed examination of radiographic films. The trailer unit layout and the nondestructive testing equipment provided are discussed in detail in this paper.

Nuclear Track Image Intensifier

"The design of the nuclear track intensifier was further analyzed to compare performance with design objectives. A preliminary analysis of the electron optics showed that the tube design suffers a small degree of astigmatism, which is increased in actual tabes by misalignment of parts, One tube was successfully completed and tested. Transit time of electrons from cathode to screen was determined to be 2.5 x 10/sup -8/ sec, 0.5 x 10/sup -8/ sec. Decay characteristics of several standard phosphors were measured. In the phosphor development phase, a latin square test was designed to evaluate combinations of thallium-activated rubidium iodide and cesium iodide phosphors under various evaporating conditions. Data were taken on various tests and analyzed statistically. On target samples submitted for tube evaluation, a reaction, which reduced light output, occurred between the aluminum and phosphor during vacuum bake. Oue image tube prepared with an alkali iodide mixture showed 10 to 25% improvement in screen resolution as compared to a P-11 screen."

A Comparison of Radiation--Induced Graft Copolymerization Utilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

"The grafting of methacrylic acid, styrene (2: 1 mole ratio) co-monomer mixture on polypropylene film and fabric, was studied to compare electron accelerators and isotopes as sources of radiation. An aluminum block that contalns i/8-in.-deep pockets covered with Mylar film for holding sample and monomer during mutual irradiatlon was developed. A preliminary comparison was made in post grafting polypropylene film and fabric preirradiated with Cow and with an electron accelerator source. It was found that post grafting was rapid at 80 ts C but slow at room temperature. Monomer equilibration before irradiation increased the grafting rate. Higher grafts were obtained when samples were irradiated in sparged and sealed containers. The grafting rate increased as dose rate decreased."

In the general magnetic field configuration considered here a pure Alfvén disturbance no longer exists; there is instead a wave with properties of both the Alfvén and fast‐slow disturbance."

The Boundary Layer Between a Plasma and a Magnetic Field - I

"The problem of a steady boundary layer or sheath between a plasma and a magnetic field is considered. A self-consistent transition layer is found which joins a uniform magnetic field at plus infinity with a collisionless field-free plasma region with arbitrary velocity distribution at minus infinity, i.e., a magnetic field profile is found such that the exact particle orbits in this field produce a current which gives rise to this field. An interesting feature of the solution is that, with any nonsingular velocity distribution at minus infinity, the magnetic field the plasma extends to infinity, exponentially attenuated, into the magnetic field region. The scale of length is the Larmor radius. Electric fields arising from charge separation in the case of particles of different mass are ignored."

Prediction of Two-Phase Flow From Mixing Length Theory

It is proposed in this report to describe a new two-phase flow mixing length model. It consists of treating the two-phase system as a continuous medium and applying to it the methods and assumptions so widely accepted in single-phase turbulent flow. Because it reduces a two-phase problem to an equivalent one in single-phase flow, the proposed model can be readily used to predict the effects of flow rate, channel geometry, and channel direction in two-phase flow.

A chemical flowsheet is proposed for recovery of strontium and rare earths from Purex wastes. The iron in the waste is first complexed with tartrate and the pH is adjusted with caustic. Strontium and rare earths are extracted by a solvent comprised of di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric--sodium di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate--tributyl phosphate -- Amsco 125-82. and are stripped with nitric acid. Processing the strip product through additional solvent extraction cycles yields isolated, concentrated strontium and rare earth fractions.
