The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements (open access)

The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements

Abstract: "Stainless steel-clad fuel sheet 0.020 in. thick with a 0.008-in. core of stainless steel plus UO2 was produced by roll cladding a powder metal compact. The effects of processing variables, core-matrix composition, quantity of oxide, and oxide particle size on the properties of the sheet were investigated. The strength and ductility of the core decreased sharply as the quantity of oxide in the core increased from 20 to 40 w/o. Over the range of matrix compositions investigated the particle size of the oxide had little affect on the core strength. In cores containing 21 w/o of oxide. 18 w/o chromium, 82 w/o iron matrix prepared from the elemental metal powders had the highest strength and ductility, but this matrix was susceptible to cracking during thermal cycling. As elemental 18 w/o chromium, 9 w/o nickel, 73 w/o iron matrix was the most satisfactory from the standpoint of fabrication and over-all characteristics of the resulting sheet."

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1953 (open access)

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1953

"Work has continued on high temperature methods for processing irradiated uranium fuel. Additional results have been obtained with fused halide treatment, solid scavengers and direct Pu distillation. With fussed fluorides about 95 per cent of the Pu was removed from a uranium sample, while treatment of uranium with HC1 gas removed almost all the Pu and many fission products. treatment of molten uranium with uranium oxide removed a substantial fraction of the fission products without removing Pu. Uranium carbide treatment results were similar to the oxide but not as effective. A small scale distillation of Pu from uranium showed that Raoult's law is obeyed."

Aerodynamics of slender wings and wing-body combinations having swept trailing edges (open access)

Aerodynamics of slender wings and wing-body combinations having swept trailing edges

From Introduction: "In the present paper, a general method is developed for solving low-aspect-ratio problems involving shed vortex sheets. Both direct and inverse problems are considered. The method is applicable for all planar problems where the velocity boundary conditions can be made homogeneous by differentiation in either the streamwise or the spanwise directions."

Determination of Tritium in Urine and Water (open access)

Determination of Tritium in Urine and Water

The sample, water or urine, is prepared for counting in a vacuum line. Urine or water is dropped onto metallic calcium, and hydrogen and tritium are evolved. The gas flowing into the evacuated system is passed through liquid nitrogen cooled traps to remove unreacted water and condensable gases. The gas is allowed to flow into a tube similar to a Geiger-Muller tube until a pressure of 15 cm of mercury is attained. Ethylene and argon are added to give a total pressure of 22 cm of mercury. The beta activity is counted with a scaling circuit having an input sensitivity of 1/4 volt. A tube similarly filled with inert hydrogen is counted simultaneously to determine the environmental background. The background count is subtracted from the sample count to obtain the true sample count. The method has a precision of ± 5% in the range of 1 to 250 pc of tritium per liter of sample. Samples with higher concentrations may be determined with appropriate dilutions. An experienced operator can do approximately 50 determinations per day. The tolerance used at LASL for tritium in urine is 250 pc/liter.

Incinerator for Radioactive Residue (open access)

Incinerator for Radioactive Residue

A batch-type incinerator has been built which will dry and burn 12 liters of wet, packed rags or the equivalent in other organic matter in 8 hours. The material is ignited and burned in a stream of oxygen. Tars in the off-gas are trapped in a water bubble, residual contaminated particles are caught by a CWS filter, and acid vapors are reacted in a caustic scrubber. The unit was designed to processes plutonium residues; however, other radioactive materials could be handled by the use of appropriate shield and manipulators.

Uranium Production Reactor (UPR) Quarterly Progress Report, May-July, 1953 (open access)

Uranium Production Reactor (UPR) Quarterly Progress Report, May-July, 1953

"Measurements of the intra-cell neutron flux distributing for a proposed Uranium Production Reactor have been made using a mock-up of a portion of the reactor core. Thermal neutron and thorium resonance neutron flux-distributions were investigated. As a result of the experimental measurements on the first mock-up, a decrease in thorium content appeared necessary in the reactor design studies. Experiments are now in progress on a second mock-up in which this change has been made."
