Model validation and sensitivity analysis of solar collector loops. Final technical report (open access)

Model validation and sensitivity analysis of solar collector loops. Final technical report

The experimental solar collector systems at Middlebury College have been modified to permit short time resolution studies of solar collector loop performance. A variety of experiments have been performed to measure the following system properties: (a) collector efficiency, (b) collector response to step changes in insolation, (c) collector response to the introduction of cold inlet water, and (d) pump cycling as a function of control sensor location and set points. Data from these experiments have been supplied to the solar group at Drexel for validation of their analytical collector loop model.

Alternative economic evaluation measures for solar industrial process heat (open access)

Alternative economic evaluation measures for solar industrial process heat

The measures most commonly used to assist decision-makers in evaluating the economic merits of solar energy projects are described and compared. An example is given to illustrate the economic evaluation measures and the results are applied to a solar industrial process heat project. Four widely used economic measures are: net present value, benefit-cost ratio, internal rate of return, and payback period. (MHR)

Plating on difficult-to-plate metals: what's new (open access)

Plating on difficult-to-plate metals: what's new

Some of the changes since 1970 in procedures for plating on such materials as titanium, molybdenum, silicon, aluminum, and gallium arsenide are summarized. While basic procedures for plating some of these materials were developed as many as 30 to 40 years ago, changes in the end uses of the plated products have necessitated new plating processes. In some cases, vacuum techniques - such as ion bombardment, ion implantation, and vacuum metallization - have been introduced to improve the adhesion of electrodeposits. In other cases, these techniques have been used to deposit materials upon which electrodeposits are required.

Numerical Data Advisory Board assembly of mathematial and physical sciences (open access)

Numerical Data Advisory Board assembly of mathematial and physical sciences

The Numerical Data Advisory Board (NDAB) is an advisory body that provides expert overview, on a broad basis, of data needs and data programs as required for the advancement of science and technology. Board members, representing various disciplines, concern themselves with the quality, reliability, availability, accessibility, and dissemination of numerical data in physical, chemical, engineering, and interdisciplinary subjects as well as numeric and non-numeric data that arise in biology and geology. Topics of concern are addressed by the NDAB membership, or by specific, carefully chosen committees and panels established by NDAB in order to include experts appropriate to the subject at hand.

Photovoltaic mechanisms in polycrystalline thin film silicon solar cells. Quarterly technical progress report No. 1, July 30-October 31, 1980 (open access)

Photovoltaic mechanisms in polycrystalline thin film silicon solar cells. Quarterly technical progress report No. 1, July 30-October 31, 1980

Major accomplishments during the first quarter of the contract period are reported. Small area diode fabrication and analysis has been continued. This technique has further been applied to many RTR ribbons. An optical technique for determination of crystallite orientations has been placed in operation. This technique has many distinct advantages. These are: (1) rapid; (2) can be set-up very inexpensively; (3) well suited for polycrystalline substrates of small grain size; and (4) can easily characterize twins. Accuracies obtained with this technique are about the same as that of the Laue technique. A technique to qualitatively evaluate grain boundary activity in unprocessed substrates has been used and valuable results obtained. Further analysis is being done to use this technique for quantitative evaluation. A major study of G.B. orientation effects is underway. Initial results on RTR ribbons have shown a good correlation of G.B. barrier height with misorientation (tilt boundaries).

Fort Hood solar energy project (open access)

Fort Hood solar energy project

During the period April 1975 to March 1978, the American Technological University (ATU) of Killeen, Texas, was awarded several follow-on contracts by the Division of Solar Energy (DSE), Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), which subsequently became the Division of Solar Technology (DST), Department of Energy (DOE). The contracts were to design a solar total energy system for use at Fort Hood, Texas. A review encompassing the period of the project from January 1975 to March 1978, was conducted by the Office of Inspector General (IG), DOE. The review examined both the management of the project by ATU and ERDA personnel and the award and administration by ERDA of the contracts to ATU for support of the project. The IG review found that: (1) there was a lack of continuity in the management of the project by both ATU and ERDA; (2) ERDA failed to maintain control of the project and failed to issue specific project direction to ATU; (3) ERDA failed to follow existing procurement regulations for the review and acceptance of unsolicited proposals from ATU; (4) the ERDA Headquarters program Manager and the Contract Administrator for the conceptual design phase of the project had failed to ensure that …
