But this picture was made in 1950, middle year of three in which the city had to let 400 billion gallons go because there was no place to put it. This is the Lake Overholser dam. M. B. Cunningham, city water superintendent, Tuesday estimated the excess water of those three years would have filled both city reservoirs 14 times. Now the lakes are dangerously low, and the first flow in the North Canadian since June 18 is only enough to supply city water needs for about seven days. (O-3-4-53) Overflow Thousands of tons of water passed Lake Overholser ever hour Sunday as the nuddy evidence of Oklahoma's unseasonal heavy rains, above, rushed down the North Canadian river. The water was allowed to flow past because Lake Overholser is filled to capacity and the water is too high in mineral content for Lake Hefner. About four feet of water has been added to Oklahoma City's larger lake during the last two weeks - amounting to about 4,000,000,000 billion gallons of water. They're the 150 men of "A" company of the mobilized 20th marine infantry battalion. Their average age is 19. Only about 20 percent of them were old enough to serve in World War II. Now called to active duty, they'll ship out of here Tuesday for the west coast. The 20th battalion was the first reserve outfit in Oklahoma to be called to active duty since the outbreak of the war in Korea. Battalion headquarters and "A" company are located here. Two other companies are in Tulsa and San Antonio, Texas."
