A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.

Colloidal Radioalbumin Aggregates for Organ Scanning : presented at 10th Annual Meeting, Nuclear Medicine Society, Montreal, Canada, June 26-29, 1963

Abstract: The exhibit shows that colloidal aggregates (10 to 20 mu) of human serum albumin I131 may be used safely by intravenous injection to perform photoscans of the heart, liver, spleen, stomach, and salivary glands in man. Large particle size suspensions (10 to 50 mu) of the same material are being investigated experimentally in animals for scanning the lungs after intravenous injection and the brain following injection into an internal carotid artery. The advantages of this test material are the relatively low radiation exposure to the target organs and the number of organs that may be examined. Radiation exposure is low because of the rapid turnover in the target organs and removal from the body, mainly by urinary excretion, within 72 hours. The mechanism of liver-spleen localization with this organic colloid is the same as for inorganic colloidal radiogold198, namely, rapid removal from the blood by the phagocytic cells of the liver and spleen. However, in contrast to the inorganic colloid, which remains in the phagocytic cells permanently, albumin is digested by proteolytic enzymes and the I131 abel is set free to re-enter the general circulation. The Solubility of Helium in Tuballoy

This technical report summarizes the work done in attempting to determine the solubility of helium in tuballoy. In general, the method used has been to allow the tuballoy to stand in contact with helium at one atmosphere presume at a fixed temperature for an extended period, then to pump off the excess helium to a low pressure in as short a time as possible (10-6 mm of Hg or less). The system was then closed off and the pressure increase was measured by a suitable gauge as a function of time. The metal was employed in the form of a powder in early measurements, and later as massive metal. The experimental techniques are described in the report.

Trough-Time Dissolver

Designing a dissolver safe for up to 5 per cent U.235 enriched NPF's and having a one a ton per day capacity is a fundamental problem of Hanford NPF Program. Two basic design concepts have so far evolved, both of which employ a recirculating system in which the fuel elements are placed in the critically safe geometry separated from the bulk of the solution in another vessel. In one concept the fuel elements are charged to a set of geometrically safe cylinders or tubes and solution is circulated through them/ In the other concept the fuel elements are placed on a flat tray while solution is sprayed over them. In the latter system, nuclear safety is obtained by avoiding submerged dissolution and the resulting neutron moderation by the solution.
