Uranium Deposits on Mesas I 1/2 and II 1/2, Lukachukai Mountains, Northeast Arizona

Abstract: Mesas 1 1/2 and II 1/2 were investigated in October 1951, to determine the extent and degree of uranium mineralization in the Salt Wash sandstone. Carnotite-vanoxite-type minerals are sufficiently concentrated to recommend 14,600 feet of drilling.

Wind-Tunnel Flutter Tests at Mach Numbers up to 3.0 of Boeing Wing Models for Weapons System 110A

"Flutter tests have been conducted on two low-aspect-ratio wing plan forms under consideration by the Boeing Airplane Company for the 110A weapons system. These configurations had three heavy nacelles near the trailing edge, and flutter tests were made both with and without the nacelles. Up to a Mach number of 3.0 the dynamic pressure required for flutter of a wing with nacelles was generally higher than that of a wing without nacelles" (p. 1).

The Equation of State of Water on the Thomas-Fermi Model

Two methods are described for extending the Thomas-Fermi model of a compressed atom to molecules or mixtures of the type Z Zn. The methods are applied to H2O at zero temperature to determine pressure and internal energy as functions of the density, the position of the protons relative to the oxygen nucleus, and the electrostatic potential distribution within the molecule.

Heat of Reaction of Chlorine Trifluoride with Water

Abstract: "A measurement of the heat liberated when chlorine trifluoride reacts with water has been made in a simple Dewar calorimeter. The chlorine trifluoride vapor was bubbled into approximately 20 moles of water; the weight of material used, heat equivalent of the calorimeter, and the temperature rise of the water and calorimeter were determined. From these data an average value for the heat of reaction was calculated to be 81.0 +/- 0.4 kcal/mole. Analysis of the reaction solution and evolved gas showed the following to be present: hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, chlorine, oxygen, and probably oxygen-chlorine compounds."

Determination of Corrosion Products and Additives in Homogeneous Reactor Fuel III. Polarographic Determination of Iron(III)

An ion-exchange -- polarographic method was developed for the determination of iron(III) in Homogeneous Reactor Fuels. Copper, which interferes, is removed from the fuel by plating it onto a cadmium coil. Iron is oxidized to iron(III) by potassium permanganate, and the iron(III) is separated from interfering metal ions by ion exchange on a Dowex 1 resin column that is in the sulfate form. The iron(III) in the effluent is determined polarographically in 0.5 M sodium citrate solution as supporting electrolyte. A fairly well defined polarographic wave is obtained for the iron(III) → iron(II) reduction at a half-wave potential of approximately -0.15 v. vs. the S.C.E. The relative standard deviation of the data for 2 µg of iron(III) per ml of solution in the polarographic cell was 6.5%; for 10 µg of iron(III) per ml it was 0.6%.

Heat of Combustion of the Product Formed by the Reaction of Acetylene and Diborane (LFPL-CZ-3)

The heat of combustion of the product formed by the reaction acetylene and diborane was found to be 20,100 +/- 100 Btu per pound for the reaction of liquid fuel to gaseous carbon dioxide, gaseous water, and solid boric oxide. The measurements were made in a Parr oxygen-bomb calorimeter, and chemical analyses both of the sample and of the combustion products indicated combustion in the bomb calorimeter to have been 97 percent complete. The estimated net heat of combustion for complete combustion would therefore be 20,700 +/- 100 Btu per pound.

The measurements were made in a Parr oxygen-bomb calorimeter, and the combustion was believed to be 98 percent complete. The estimated net-heat of combustion for complete combustion would therefore be 20,850 +/- 150 Btu per pound" (p. 1).

Blow-Out Velocities of Solutions of Hydrocarbons and Boron Hydride - Hydrocarbon Reaction Products in a 1 7/8-Inch-Diameter Combustor

Combustion blow-out velocities were determined for JP-4 solutions containing: (1) 10 % ethylene - decaborane reaction product, (2) 10% and 20% acetylene - diborane reaction product, and (3) 5.5%, 15.7%, and 30.7% methylacetylene - diborane reaction product. These were compared with blow-out velocities for JP-4, propylene oxide, and neohexane and previously reported data for JP-4 solutions of pentaborane. For those reaction products investigated, the blow-out velocities at a fixed equivalence ratio were higher for those materials containing higher boron concentrations; that is, blow-out velocity increased in the following order: (1) methylacetylene - diborane, (2) acetylene - diborane, and (3) ethylene - decaborane reaction products.
