Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report

The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or auxiliary power units (APUs) in a standard passenger automobile. As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load requirements and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has beeen established. This vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250 to 350 cubic inch) displacement, spark ignition engine. Accessories to be considered are the alternator, power steering system, power brakes, air conditioner, cooling fan, water pump and emission control air pump. A program summary of major accomplishments is presented including: accessory drive devices analyses; vehicle computer model fuel economy analyses; improved accessory efficiency analysis; resized engine fuel economy analysis; accessory evaluation matrix completed; drive-systems trade-study completed and the prime concept presented; and variable-speed belt-drive concepts reviewed.

Diffraction Radiation by a Line Charge Moving Past a Comb: A Model of Radiation Losses in an Electron Ring Accelerator

A calculation is given of the radiated energy loss from a charged rod which moves at constant speed past an infinite set of parallel semi-infinite conducting plates of infinitesimal thickness, with the rod taken parallel to and at a fixed distance from the plate edges. The problem is analyzed using the Wiener-Hopf technique, and the resulting formulas are evaluated analytically in the limits of high rod speed and low rod speed, and compared with numerical evaluation over the full range of speeds.

Electric gun: a new tool for ultrahigh-pressure research

We have developed a new tool for ultrahigh-pressure research at LLL. This system, which we call the electric gun, has already achieved thin flyer plate velocities in excess of 20 km/s and pressures of the order of 2 TPa in tantalum. We believe that the electric gun is competitive with laser- and nuclear-driven methods of producing shocks in the 1-to-5 TPa range because of its precision and ease and economy of operation. Its development is recommended for shock initiation studies, dry runs for Site 300 hydroshots, and as a shock wave generator for surface studies.

A feasibility study was made of the hydroelectric power potential at Broadwater Dam in western Montana. Two alternative configurations for the potential project were evaluated and the economics of four possible sources of project funding were assessed. The configurations analyzed were an apron-mounted configuration, in which the turbine-generator units are located on the downstream apron of the existing dam, and a conventional configuration, in which the units are located in a new powerhouse adjacent to the existing dam. The funding sources considered were the Department of Energy loan program, the United States Bureau of Reclamation PL-984 loan program and conventional revenue bonds, both taxable and tax-exempt. The optimal project alternative was determined to be the apron-mounted configuration. The final choice of funding would be dependent on the power purchaser. It was shown that, regardless of the configuraton or funding source selected, the project would be feasible. The cost of the apron-mounted configuration, which would consist of four turbine-generator units for a total installed capacity of 9.76 MW, was estimated as $13,250,000 with financing provided by either a PL-984 loan or tax-exempt bonds. Permeability of generic repository rocks at simulated in situ conditions. [Comparison of Westerly granite and White Lake genissic granite]

New laboratory data are reported on the effect of confining (lithostatic) pressure, pore-water pressure, and principal stress difference on permeability of Westerly granite and White Lake gneissic granite. Permeabilities as low as 10/sup -19/ cm/sup 2/ (10/sup -11/ D) have been measured successfully, using a transient technique. Principal strains, electrical conductivity, and compressional velocity are determined simultaneously. Applied loads on the 15-cm diameter by 28-cm long test sample are controlled automatically and all data are taken by a microcomputer. Results on the gneissic granite indicate permeabilities of 10/sup -18/ to 10/sup -19/ cm/sup 2/ that appear to be unaffected either by effective pressure or by stress. The granite yields permeabilities of 4x10/sup -16/ cm/sup 2/ that decrease by a factor of two with pressure and vary by a factor of two with stress. When compared to the initial value, compressional velocities increase by 4% and conductivity decreases by 50% as pressure is increased to 50 MPa in the gneissic granite. In granite, these become 3% and 58%, respectively. At pressure, loading of the granite of 0.5 of failure stress increases conductivity by about 20%.

It was shown that by controlling the sputtering preparation conditions of noncrystalline Ge films the surface microstructure can be drastically altered by simply etching in 30% H/sub 2/O/sub 2/. The resulting surface has a total reflectance of less than 3% in the solar spectrum. This flat-black surface appearance is shown to be due to a dense array of aligned, needle-like protrusions which have an extremely high aspect ratio and both a cross-sectional area and a separation between needles on the order of the wavelength of solar radiation. A systematic series of thin films were prepared by rf-sputtering with rf-power and Ar gas pressure as the primary preparation parameters and characterizing the various films.

Dual-laser flow cytometry of single mammalian cells. [Performance of low-power argon and high-power krypton laser system for quantitative analysis and sorting of cells]

An improved dual-laser flow cytometric system for quantitative analysis and sorting of mammalian cells has been developed using a low-power argon and high-power krypton laser as illumination sources, thus permitting the excitation of fluorescent dyes having absorption regions ranging from the ultraviolet to infrared. Cells stained in liquid suspension with fluorescent dyes enter a flow chamber where they intersect two spatially separated laser beams. Separate pairs of quartz beam-shaping optics focus each beam onto the cell stream. Electro-optical sensors measure fluorescence and light scatter from cells that are processed electronically and displayed as frequency distribution histograms. Cells also can be electronically separated and microscopically identified. The ease and versatility of operation designed into this system represent a marked technological improvement for dual-laser excited flow systems. Details of this instrument are described along with illustrative examples of cells stained with mithramycin and rhodamine and analyzed for DNA content, total protein, and nuclear and cytoplasmic diameter.

Real-time delay monitor for flow-system cell sorters

For optimum performance in cell sorting, it is critical to assure proper timing in the charging of droplets to be deflected. A method for determining the transit delay time in cell sorters has been devised and applied to daily operation in the Los Alamos sorter systems. This delay monitor relies on detection of either scattered or absorbed light from cells in the fluid stream near the point of droplet breakoff.

Modification of a hardwired numerical control to include switchable Inch/Metric capability. [Digital logic of Hughes N/C Model 2000 Control on EE Monarch lathe]

A unique and relatively simple method is described for modifying a 1965-vintage hardwired numerical control (N/C) for a machine tool so that it can operate in the SI (Metric) as well as the Inch mode. The modification procedure will be valuable during the transition from Inch to SI measurements, as it allows a numerically-controlled machine tool originally designed to operate only in the Inch mode to be ''recycled'' for SI use. The system digital logic of a Hughes N/C Model 2000 Control on an EE Monarch lathe was modified by changing the modulus of the Command Phase and Reference counters so that the control system has a SI modulus as well as an Inch modulus. The modified system thus allows selection of either the SI operating mode or the Inch mode by a front panel switch.

Economics of geothermal electricity generation from hydrothermal resources

The most important factors affecting the economics of geothermal electricity production are the wellhead temperature or enthalpy, the well flow rate, and the cost of the wells. The capital cost of the powerplant is significant, but not highly sensitive to these resource characteristics. The optimum geothermal plant size will remain small, usually in the 50-100 MWe range. Therefore, the opportunities for achieving significant cost reductions through ''economies of scale'' are small. The steam and binary power cycles are closely competitive; the binary cycle appears better when the brine temperature is below 200-230/sup 0/C, and the flashed steam cycle appears better above this range. Geothermal electricity production is capital intensive; over 75 percent of the generation costs are fixed costs related to capital investment. Technological advances are needed to reduce costs from marginal geothermal resources and thus to stimulate geothermal energy development. Significant reduction in power costs would be achieved by reducing well drilling costs, stimulating well flow rates, reducing powerplant capital costs, increasing powerplant efficiency and utilization, and developing more effective exploration techniques for locating and assessing high-quality resources. Effect of a bridge balance network on a semiconductor pressure transducer

Pressure transducers and accelerometers that make use of semiconductors strain gages or have strain gages diffused on a silicon diaphragm cannot be used with a bridge balance network if one wants to achieve thermal zero compensation. Thermal zero compensation is compensating for the change in output due to temperature only, and is typically +-1.5 percent of the full scale output for a temperature change of 100/sup 0/F. The reason for not using a balance network is the way in which the transducer is thermally compensated. There are two ways to obtain thermal zero compensation with a semiconductor transducer: either match each individual gage to each other, or trim one-half of the bridge to match the other half of the bridge. It is the latter that is easiest to do and the method the manufacturers use. The method is described.
