Multi-wire slurry wafering demonstrations (open access)

Multi-wire slurry wafering demonstrations

A series of ten slicing demonstrations on a multi-wire slurry saw, manufactured by Yasunaga Engineering Company of Japan and distributed by GEOS Corporation of Stamford, Connecticut, was made to evaluate the silicon ingot wafering capabilities. The results revealed that the present sawing capabilities can provide usable wafer area from an ingot 1.05 m/sup 2//kg (e.g., kerf width 0.135 mm and wafer thickness 0.265 mm). Satisfactory surface qualities and excellent yield of silicon wafers were found. One drawback is that the add-on cost of producing wafer from this saw, as presently used, is considerably higher than the systems being developed by Varian and Crystal Systems for the Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Protect (LSSA), Task II, primarily because the Yasunaga saw uses a large quantity of wire. The add-on cost can be significantly reduced by extending the wire life and/or by reuse of properly plated wire to restore the diameter.

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Sixth quarterly report, September 21, 1976--December 20, 1976 (open access)

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Sixth quarterly report, September 21, 1976--December 20, 1976

Two high-pressure flow microreactors continue to function effectively for studies of the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene, methyl-substituted dibenzothiophene and also for studies of the hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline. The hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene has been examined in a flow system in a totally reproducible fashion free from catalyst deactivation for extended periods. The reaction is first-order in dibenzothiophene, and all of the reaction products except H/sub 2/S are sulfur free. A program for determining the kinetics and reaction network of methyl-substituted dibenzothiophenes was started. For example, the rate for hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene is about one-fifth the rate for dibenzothiophene. The hydrocarbon reaction products except H/sub 2/S are sulfur free; therefore, the initial point of attack is concluded to be the C-S bond. The hydrodenitrogenation of quinoline was examined further by replacing white oil with hexadecane; this substitution permits the determination of the nitrogen-free reaction products by gas chromatography. These studies show that the C-N bond is broken after at least the heterocyclic ring and preferably both rings are hydrogenated. The hydrogenolysis reactions are rate limiting for the overall process of nitrogen removal. The hydrodenitrogenation of acridine is slower than that of quinoline. The reaction network shows that the molecule must be hydrogenated before …

Summary of mechanical properties for JBK-75 forgings (open access)

Summary of mechanical properties for JBK-75 forgings

Increased strengths can be achieved in precipitation-hardened stainless steels by deforming the steel and retaining a worked structure prior to aging. JBK-75 is one example of a superalloy which will respond to this type of thermomechanical processing. The present study was undertaken to determine the tensile properties of different forged shapes resulting from the combined effects of strain hardening and precipitation hardening. Various size bar stock was deformed by High Energy Rate Forging (HERF) and subsequently aged. Resultant tensile properties were quite variable, showing a wide range of strengths and ductilities, well below expected values. The tensile properties were strongly dependent upon forging geometry.

Multiple three-decision rules for 2/sup k/-factorial simple effects. Technical report No. 8 (open access)

Multiple three-decision rules for 2/sup k/-factorial simple effects. Technical report No. 8

One of the problems confronted in the investigation of environmental health and in biological research more generally is the fact that organisms often respond to combinations of treatments in ways which are not predictable from the way they respond to each of these taken separately. One air pollutant may, for example, disable the respiratory tract's self cleaning mechanisms and thereby increase its sensitivity to the effects of other pollutants. It is important that laboratory experiments be able to simultaneously detect the effects of the various possible combinations of treatments in a way that utilizes the data as effectively as possible. This paper deals with the optimal use of data from such experiments when the response variable can be regarded (possibly after undergoing a suitable transformation) as having a normal distribution with mean determined by the combination of treatments it has undergone.

Correction of the coupling resonance in intersecting storage accelerators (open access)

Correction of the coupling resonance in intersecting storage accelerators

It is noted that correction of the coupling resonance, ..nu../sub x/ - ..nu../sub y/ = 0, in intersecting storage accelerators with superconducting magnets requires two families of correcting skew quadrupoles with two independent power supplies. A possible location for the two families is suggested, and results are given for the required strengths of the skew quadrupoles and the required accuracy of the corrections. The results are applied to the ISABELLE storage accelerator.

Workshop on environmental aspects of geothermal resources development (open access)

Workshop on environmental aspects of geothermal resources development

The workshop is divided into the following subjects: water quality, air quality, biological impact, hazards, environmental impact evaluation, and land use and socio-economic impact. Individual problems in each subject area are evaluated by the following criteria: probability of occurrence, seriousness of consequences, resource applicability, time urgency for new research, and researchability for new research. Recommended approaches to solution are given for each problem. Minority statements are given in some cases. (MHR)
