The "Little Skojer" Ditcher
Photograph of Mr. J.W. Rhoades operates the hydraulic controls and lifts the nose of the "Little Skojer" ditcher. Mr. Rhoades designed and built this original ditcher with parts from old farm equipment, an old electric refrigerator and washing machine and surplus war materials.

Photograph of R. T. Douglas and his field. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Pig weeds grow on fertile land where I planted corn twice this year,” says R. T. Douglas. “My fist planting washed out and the second planting had just started growing when this field was flooded a second time, I’ve got about 75 acres on which there will be a total crop loss this year. If my new drainage system had been completed in time I expect I’d have made 40 bushels of corner per acre here from the first planting.”

Photograph of flood water damage. Turning bay with a pitch fork in order to dry it out before removing it from the field. This alfalfa hay was damaged by floodwater on July 12, 1958. The damage is being inspected by John Crooch, Soil Conservation service [SCS] and C.E. Lagow, a neighbor, assisting Herman Flack to remove the usless hay from the field to protect the stand from further damage from the hay covering it. OK-6[unclear]-4.

Approximately 25 tons of excellent hay were lost from this, the second overflow in 1958. Cane Creek overflowed 3 times during 1957. This watershed is not protected from flooding. OK-625-12.

Photograph of a densely forested area consisting of black locust, red juniper (cedar), cottonwood, and hackberry volunteered trees planted on spoils banks. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Spoils banks dug in 1944 and planted to black locust and red juniper (cedar) trees in 1947 by H. C. Skidmore, district cooperator. Besides the planted locust and cedar, cottonwood, and hackberry volunteered in this picture. Crows, songbirds and squirrel (Fox and Grey) nest in this planting. 6000 trees were planted.”

Photograph of Upland alfalfa for soil management, William Widnay farm. Alfalfa is an excellent legume for soil building and cover. Mr. Widney uses alfalfa on upland (III - ?) in his conservation crop rotation. This alfalfa was seeded in the fall of 1952. For a nurse crop, ½ bushel of wheat per acre was cross-drilled in the wide spaced rows (every other row drilled). Wheat made 20 bushels per acre. Utilization of alfalfa has been a spring hay crop, seed crop in the summer and fall pastures. He has another planting of alfalfa and plans to plow this one up in the fall. His plans are for the alfalfa to be in a 3-year rotation. He has been a soil district cooperator since 1948. OK-279-12.
